So I was chatting on IRC today, and guess who's interested? The
illustrious Andrew Dunstan, and he's already got a talk on
pg+json+plv8 which would be quite a cool topic, based on the plv8 talk
I went to in Amsterdam by Will Leinweber from Heroku.
I've copied him here, as well as a few other usual suspects as
prospective speakers:
Andrew Dunstan
Steven Frost
Josh Berkus
Greg Smith
David Fetter (already said he can't make it)
Joe Conway (same, but who knows?)
Bruce Momjian (tentatively committed)
Magnus Hagander
Josh Drake
Jonathan Katz
Will Leinweber
Rob Brucks (Local Rackspace DBA)
Corey Horton (Local Dell MessageOne DBA)
For those of you that don't know, we're looking to have it on
3/28/2012 and it looks like we've found a venue for 100 people in a
classroom setting for only $350 (Katz I know you hate me right now!)
in nice a hotel with reasonable rooms @ $139/night. As a result we
might be able to bring in more speakers than we originally thought,
depending on how much more sponsorship we can pick up.
Those of you who think you'd like to speak, please reply! If you can
think of anyone else you might be interested, please forward this.
FYI Average high temps in Austin on 3/28 are 75F with a record of 98F ;)

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that we are expecting to pick up
the airfare and hotel for out of town speakers, except perhaps Magnus
(assuming he comes) since he's coming from Europe, but for him we hope
to work something out with the NYC PGDay team where we share that cost
between the two events.
The sponsorship situation will determine how many speakers we can
swing, and so far we've definitely got money from Enova, and very
likely PG.us, and hopefully VMWare. We'll be reaching out to other
potential sponsors as things solidify.
Stay tuned, and please let us know if you would like to speak (as few
of you already have). Oh, and please include Jim Nasby on replies
related to speaking.

I'm copying a couple other prospective speakers here (you two please see
thread history below):
David Wheeler
Merlin Moncure
So, as the Professor would say, good news everybody! We now have two
offical Bronze Sponsors:
Jon Erdman - $500
Jim Nasby - $500
This generous contribution by these two pillars of the postgres
community (*cough*) will allow us to secure our venue today, or at least
get the wheels in motion. As a result, those of you who've said they'll
speak are safe to start planning your trip, as it is now definitely
going to happen! We have the call in to the venue and when we get the
contract signed I'll let you know so we can get plane tickets reserved.
Stay tuned...

FYI, I see flights round-trip from Philly for USD $240. You realize
there is perhaps plan for a Washington DC PGDay on March 30? I think
they are waiting on an venue too.

Damn, that's so cheap I almost want to tell you to book it now (and
twist Greg's arm) even though we don't have paperwork on the venue
yet. They said it was available and quoted the price, but we called
too late today to get a hold of them for a definite 100% yes.
You know what? Go ahead and grab it if you can. If we have to change
the day (very unlikely) I will personally eat the cost of that ticket.
That's just too cheap to pass up!
Yes sir, Mr. Katz and I planned it that way so we could share
speakers. The idea is folks can come into Austin, then hit DC, then
NYC, then out. This will work particularly well for Magnus.

We probably have until mid-next-week to get that fair, so let's wait.
When should I arrive/leave? Actually, since DC isn't firm yet, I am not
sure if I should return into DC or Philly.

Oh, also, there are multiple airlines all offering $240 fairs so I don't
expect it to change soon.

Really whenever you'd like. I'd imagine most speakers would come the
day before and leave the day of in the evening, or the day after I
suppose. At this point I'm not sure if our sponsorship situation will
allow us to get everyone a room for two nights, but at the cheap rate
we're getting that's not out of the realm of possibility by any means.
I suspect Magnus might sample the town for a day or two before since
he's never been. The rooms are only $139 and the hotel is sweet, check
out the pictures (maybe even cheaper if we get a block):

If you want to come early and hang out with Jim and I, we'd love to
have you!

I believe speakers can pay for extra nights own their own, as it isn't
really part of the conference.

Here are the details I just got from Robert Treat about the DC PGDay
event (CC'ing him).

Seems once they announce and Austin has a firm venue, people who are
attending both events need to book flights from from Austin to DC --- we
can take the train from DC to NYC.

FYI, the DC event is in Sterling, VA, which is right near Dulles
airport, so I suggest people get flights into Dulles.

(I have trimmed down the email CC list) I wanted to mention that it is
unrealistic to think that many people will fly out of Austin for the
east coast on the night of the event. There are very few flights, and
the total travel time is six hours (few non-stops), so if you leave at
3pm you get home by 9pm, or you leave at 9pm and get home at 6am, both
of which seem unworkable. There are no 7pm flights because they don't
want to be landing at 2am. (There is a 5pm Austin-Dulles, arrive 9pm,
but that is the latest they fly out, and that seems too tight.)
On the flip side, I do think speakers can pay for the extra hotel night
own their own, or the company might pay for it.
I just wanted to give a realistic estimate of how many people will be
staying Wednesday night.

I'm waiting for the DC event to be booked before I nail down my own
travel plans, but I will likely attend all three of the PUG events. I
expect to take a round-trip from PHL to Austin (the $240 flights out of
there are unbeatable), then drive from there to the DC location. That
would let me offer a few people a ride from PHL to the DC venue. Fast
to go right from Austin to Dulles, that may not be practical to book in
all cases through.

I see PHL-Austin-Dulles for $385.20, and Austin to Dulles is non-stop.

Hey Jon, how are you set up for speakers in Austin? I'm in for the NY
and DC events, and thinking about doing the Austin one as well.
Side note, we have a site up now, pgday.bwpug.org. Still have some
kinks to work out, but it's coming together.

Yes, I already linked to that from my web site:
http://pgday.bwpug.org/
and will link to that URL in my blog entry.

At this point I think the only 100% people are Merlin Moncure (who lives
close in Dallas) and Bruce, but it appears Greg and Josh B will come as
well (perhaps with others from PGX), and Andrew Dunstan and Will
Leinweber have both expressed interest.
I think this means we're close to filling up the time, but sponsorship
has yet to be worked out completely. Also, if we ended up in a situation
where OmniTI and or PGX sponsor the travel of their people, our venue is
so cheap maybe we pick up a second room or something...
Unfortunately, I'm at the Enova home office in Chicago this week, so
it's tough for me to work on logistics right now. Let me speak to Jim
and Cindy today and try to get back to you and everyone ASAP, but it
might not be until after I'm back in Austin which is Friday evening.
Sorry for the delay. :(

FYI, Greg confirmed I could mention he was coming to all three events on
my blog.

I know that I'm the resident cross open source DB guy using PG and the
*other* big DB, but I could probably help out. I would probably best
be used as a helper, or I could do photography. I did photography at
the other DB conference in Santa Clara, CA, which enterprise db
sponsored. It was fun getting pictures of Bruce speaking in front of
a *ySQL banner.
Sorry I've Ben out of the picture for a while. I've been doing
community Linux and SQL teaching for Geek Austin.

All,
Keep in mind that while it's great to have lots of exciting out-of-town
guest speakers, you should also use Austin pgDay as an opportunity to
let local people speak.

That doesn't apply to anyone who doesn't normally attend AustinPUG
meetings, like all of the folks coming in from out of town. You also
might be able to get local companies to speak who wouldn't make the
effort for a PUG meeting.
Also, I think it might be interesting to have Mark speak on adminning
Postgres and MySQL together.

FWIW, this is my opinion based on running and attending other pgDays
elsewhere. I'm not offering to get involved with organizing this thing,
just speaking at it (maybe). Just to be clear.

So, should we book our flights to Austin? I do see the event on the

Jon, can you draft something? Enlist Carol's help if you want; I suspect others on this list can provide ideas too.

Sorry, got caught up in stuff. We have the venue locked in for 3/28 so go ahead and book. People who are clear to make travel arrangements (i.e. these people are accepted as speakers already):
Bruce
Magnus
Greg
Merlin (but he's local)
Josh B., Andrew, Wheeler - You guys are basically good too, but I'm waiting to hear from Josh about what PGX can afford...please let me know as soon as you figure it out so we know how many of you are coming, as with only one track I'm not sure we can squeeze all three of you in (see below).
Everyone else: We've checked and they do have a second smaller (30 people) room available that same day (which we have not received pricing on as yet), so we do have the option to run two tracks and accommodate more speakers. Without the second room there are basically only 8 slots, which depending on what PGX does, are pretty close to full now. We are holding one slot for the local VMWare rep to come and speak since they want to sponsor, so that consumes another one.
At this point I'm relatively certain that we'll pull the trigger and go for the second track, but I need to reach out to our potential sponsors first to make sure we have the funds to cover it, particularly the additional speaker costs to fill said track.
I will update you all ASAP. Thank you for you patience!

As previously noted, any travel costs for Wheeler are up to Iovation,
not PGX.

Both the DC and NYC events are now listed on postgresql.org and have
their respective web sites up:
http://www.postgresql.org/about/event/1378/
http://pgday.bwpug.org/
http://www.postgresql.org/about/event/1360/
http://pgday.nycpug.org/
Descriptions of the two events are very similar. I made the listing for
the DC event reference its proximity to the NYC one as well as provide
an initial list of speakers. We're not doing a CFP, not enough time at
this point.
I'd like all three events to mention each other. I already made the DC
one mention the NYC one.
I can create another event announcement and we can include you in a
group e-mail to pgsql-announce. The most important thing that I can't
do for you is get a web page up for your event. The second step after
that is to get a place people can register at.

Updated the description on our end to mention PGDay DC - Did not have it originally because it wasn't announced yet :-) Should appear whenever the caching refreshes on the main site
Will add the other mentions on the website when I get home tonight.
