Tom,

Since our disk is filled full so fast,
Does logs under pg_xlog can be deleted and how to turn off it??

Thanks.

Easy:

su - postgres
pg_ctl stop
cd $PGDATA
mkdir /mnt/drive2/pg_xlog
cp -p pg_xlog/* /mnt/drive2/pg_xlog/
mv pg_xlog pg_xlog_old
ln -s /mnt/drive2/pg_xlog pg_xlog
pg_ctl start

Everyone,

-

The guys on one of our servers deleted a table and need the data from
it. Somehow, our backup job did not run.
We have the pg_xlog that should (may) contain the deleted data. We
need to know if there is a way to extract the
records that were deleted from the file and write them back into the
table. Is there a way to retrieve the data from
the pg_xlog?

This is a server running x86 Solaris 10, postgres 8.2.4.

Naomi

I think i'll answer my own question, after. Since this is a write ahead
log, the only thing contained would be the "Drop Table"
statement. Since there are many databases in this instance, we would
have to restore the instance somewhere else, replaying
until just before the drop, then extract what we need.

Sigh.

Hi all

How can I clean up the pg_xlog directory ?

I've 710 go of those file.

I've archive_mode on but not in the pg_xlog directory
I've something like

archive_mode = on # allows archiving to be done
archive_command = 'cp -i %p /databases/Archives/WAL/%f </dev/null'

so can I just do

	postgresql stop
	rm f pg_xlog/*
	postgresql start

Regards.

It will keep each WAL file until your archive command which is
supposed to copy it completes with an exit code of zero. It sounds
like that's not happening. What does that destination directory
look like? What messages are you seeing in your log files?

No.

Thanks for the help

In fact you right, they are some problem about the copy (wrong owner of the
/WAL directory), so the WAL is not copied. That's why I got ... 45000 files
in the pg_xlog.

Thanks for your help.

No.

I strongly suggest using something like walmgr or pitrtools to manage
this. Walmgr is part of skytools, pitrtools can be found here:
