but pgstat.tmp file is not ppresent in this directory. Can someone tell us
why this error messgae is logged?

Thanks.

I don't know but I would try this first:
touch pg_stat_tmp/pgstat.tmp
chmod 0777 pg_stat_tmp/pgstat.tmp
ls -halZ pg_stat_tmp

Then presumably you have your stats_temp_directory parameter set to a
path where that is not true.

But the error message is showing the specific file path that the stats
collector tried to open.

I'm wondering whether the OP is confused about which data directory
is in use. It's pretty hard to explain "No such file or directory"
by any theory other than that pg_stat_tmp isn't really there in the
server's CWD.

I have set stats_temp_directory to postgresql/data/pg_stat_tmp, but still
this message is coming and also created pgstat.tmp file in that location
manually, but this file is getting removed automatically in few minutes.

postgresql/data/pg_stat_tmp> touch pgstat.tmp
postgresql/data/pg_stat_tmp> ls -rtl
total 96
-rw-r--r-- 1 novell novell 0 2011-06-15 23:36 a
-rw------- 1 novell novell 92446 2011-06-16 21:23 pgstat.stat
-rw------- 1 novell novell 0 2011-06-16 21:23 pgstat.tmp

postgresql/data/pg_stat_tmp> ls -rtl
total 96
-rw-r--r-- 1 novell novell 0 2011-06-15 23:36 a
-rw------- 1 novell novell 92446 2011-06-16 21:23 pgstat.stat
-rw------- 1 novell novell 0 2011-06-16 21:23 pgstat.tmp

postgresql/data/pg_stat_tmp> ls -rtl
total 96
-rw-r--r-- 1 novell novell 0 2011-06-15 23:36 a
-rw------- 1 novell novell 92446 2011-06-16 21:23 pgstat.stat

Any idea?
Thanks.

Hei

Are you running postgres with the user 'novell' or 'postgres'?
The user running postgres must own the directories with the data.

No, we run postgres with the novell user only.

The file is being opened for write.

Permissions? Space? Kernel settings?

Hi

I am not quite sure whether I am at the right place here.

I installed PostgreSQL on a DebianEdu 11 system. First, I had only
version 14 by the "versionless" package. It ran as far as I can
remember (at least I remember creating roles and databases). Then I
decided to install 11 to 13 too to test "simultaneously" on several
versions. I did so on two systems and moved /etc/postgresql to a place
where I could put it into subversion and symlinked.

thiemo @ thiemos-toshi ~ % ll -d /etc/postg*

/home/thiemo/private_documents/linux/skolelinux/etc/postgresql

I cannot remember having changed the structure of the structure of the
config directory, so I am puzzled to find the directory "main" within.
I think it is causing troubles because before I symlinked
postgresql.conf, trying to start ended in complaints of not finding
said config file. This, I will ask Debian people.

Now, it sort of starts, but it keeps logging missing statistics file
and using stale statistics.

I am concerned about three things.
- Performance problems because of the stale statistics being used
- Filling up log unnecessarily
- The linking of postgresql.conf will have side effects.

Actually, the first one is not that much of concern as I do not burden
load on the server, but I wonder what this is about. What do you think?

Kind regards

Thiemo
