Have you run initdb? My guess is no.
Also, when you run initdb, the data directory it uses (I use /var/lib/pgsql,
which I set up by having my .zshrc file export PGDATA=/var/lib/pgsql
for my postgres account) needs to be the same as that passed to postmaster
via the -D option.
Oh, initdb really should be run as the postgres user. Definately not as
root! Make sure your permissions are set up ahead of time!

Is there a way of installing PostgreSQL 8.0.3 not by
compiling the source code and not by using rpm? Is there
binary files (already compiled) for installation?
Installing PostgreSQL in these two ways cause many problems
with missing libraries and/or files.
Thanks!

There are rpms for several distros available.

See http://www.PostgreSQL.org/ftp/binary for binaries.
Also remember to install
http://developer.PostgreSQL.org/~devrim/compat-postgresql-libs-3-3PGDG.i686.rpm
before installing all RPMs.

Unless you use the package repositories of the PostgreSQL project, you
will get only major version 12 from the Ubuntu repositories. Check
https://www.postgresql.org/download/
Since Linux has a good package management, you just have to install the
packages with apt.
Of course you'll have to adjust some settings in order to optimize
performance. Try https://pgtune.leopard.in.ua/ to find out what to change.

Holger

Hi ,
What right way to split the PostgreSQL data between the file system (mount
point) in Linux in the installation process?
Thanks

Create your own file system for the data directory, so that PostgreSQL cannot fill the root file system.
It can make sense to provide additional file systems for "pg_wal" and the log files.

Hi Laurenz,
Just curious, Is there any technical advantage to having additional file
systems for "pg_wal" and the log files.?
Thank you,
Nikhil

1. avoid log files and data files from filling your WAL disk and crashing the server
2. if you are using different devices, spread the I/O load

These are our mount points:
/var/lib/pgsql/9.6/data/base
/var/lib/pgsql/9.6/data/base/pg_xlog
/var/lib/pgsql/9.6/data/base/pg_log
/var/lib/pgsql/backups

I would suggest /data instead of /data/base.

That's fine from my point of view.

Debian installs always include the version number and the name of the
cluster (you can have several) in the path.
example:
/var/lib/postgresql/14/main
It's not necessary to use the base path /var/lib/postgresql though.
According to the FHS (filesystem hierarchy standard), variable data not
belonging to a human user (whose data reside under /home) should be
somewhere under /var, so /var/pgsql/14/main would also be nice.
Regards,
Holger
