I've recently installed postgres in a new computer running solaris 8,
and I can't connect to it running psql. When I try it the response is:

bash-2.03$ ./psql
Password:
psql: server closed the connection unexpectedly
This probably means the server terminated abnormally
before or while processing the request.

And on the log file i see:

LOG: connection received: host=[local]
LOG: connection received: host=[local]
LOG: server process (pid 6308) was terminated by signal 11
LOG: terminating any other active server processes
LOG: all server processes terminated; reinitializing shared memory and
semaphores
LOG: database system was interrupted at 2003-03-25 14:58:41 GMT
LOG: checkpoint record is at 0/7EBB30
LOG: redo record is at 0/7EBB30; undo record is at 0/0; shutdown TRUE
LOG: next transaction id: 480; next oid: 16886
LOG: database system was not properly shut down; automatic recovery in
progress
LOG: ReadRecord: record with zero length at 0/7EBB70
LOG: redo is not required
LOG: database system is ready

I configured using

./configure --prefix=/apps/pgsql-7.3.2 --without-readline
--with-openssl=/usr/local/ssl --with-pam

Some idea??

Can you provide a debugger stack trace? This should be leaving a core
dump file in the database subdirectory ($PGDATA/base/something/core).

Yes, there's a core in the data directory, here is the stack trace:

This only happen when in my pg_hba.conf file I put password on the
method validation for local, instead the default trust.

I suppose is due to openssl :(
I'll have to rebuild the application whitout support for it ( i compiled
without it in other machine and all is fine )

Could be the pam support instead?

After staring at the code for awhile, the only scenario I can construct
goes like this:

1. You had a $PGDATA/global/pg_pwd file when you started the postmaster.
2. For some reason, the file disappeared or became unreadable.
3. At the next SIGHUP, load_user() would delete user_lines and then
exit, leaving user_sorted pointing at pfree'd memory.
4. The above crash is then exactly what one would expect.

load_user and load_group are clearly buggy in that they don't take care
to keep the data structures in sync after an open failure --- but I'm
having a hard time concocting a reason why pg_pwd would disappear like
that. Ideas anyone?
