We provide a PostgreSQL instance that we configure ourselves. An application is now needing the uuid-ossp extension which requires the -with-uuid=ossp flag added to the configuration. When we did the original configuration, we did the entire world which means the libraries are available. Is there any way to add this to the configuration without having to re-run the make and installs? Or is there a way around this like copying the .sql and .lib files to the appropriate directories? Or can the configure statement be run again with just the new flag?

Here is what we run for each install:

     ./configure --prefix=${POSTGRES_DIR} --bindir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/bin --sbindir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/sbin --libexecdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/libexec --sysconfdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/etc --libdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/lib --includedir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/include --datadir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/data --mandir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/man --docdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc --htmldir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc --dvidir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc --pdfdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc --psdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc --with-perl --with-systemd --with-pam

   make world
   make install
   make install-docs
   make install-world

Here is what is in the contrib directory:
/u01/app/postgres/product/postgresql/contrib/uuid-ossp>ls
expected/ Makefile sql/ uuid-ossp--1.0--1.1.sql uuid-ossp--1.1.sql uuid-ossp.c uuid-ossp.control uuid-ossp--unpackaged--1.0.sql

My gut is telling me you won't need to recompile. (since you are compiling from the source tree, with the source include files), but you need to check.
Why don't you give it a try the easy way first? Do you have a test system?

The path looks like it's a very unconventional installation. Usually, it should be something like /usr/local/... if it's on a unixoide system.

Maybe it's a Mac. This should be mentioned in the question.

This is on Linux. It is a custom install. We don't use RPMs but the tar ball of the binaries. This is why we have the config file when we create the software.

Hi,

Have you done “at least” the following

cd /u01/app/postgres/product/postgresql/contrib/uuid-ossp

make

make install

De : Reno, Natalie <Natalie.Reno@cchmc.org>

Objet : Reconfiguring active PostgreSQL instance

We provide a PostgreSQL instance that we configure ourselves. An application
is now needing the uuid-ossp extension which requires the –with-uuid=ossp
flag added to the configuration. When we did the original configuration, we
did the entire world which means the libraries are available. Is there any
way to add this to the configuration without having to re-run the make and
installs? Or is there a way around this like copying the .sql and .lib files
to the appropriate directories? Or can the configure statement be run again
with just the new flag?

Here is what we run for each install:

     ./configure --prefix=${POSTGRES_DIR} --bindir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/bin
--sbindir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/sbin --libexecdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/libexec
--sysconfdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/etc --libdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/lib
--includedir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/include --datadir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/data
--mandir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/man --docdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc
--htmldir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc --dvidir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc
--pdfdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc --psdir=${POSTGRES_DIR}/doc --with-perl
--with-systemd --with-pam

   make world

   make install

   make install-docs

   make install-world

Here is what is in the contrib directory:

/u01/app/postgres/product/postgresql/contrib/uuid-ossp>ls

expected/ Makefile sql/ uuid-ossp--1.0--1.1.sql uuid-ossp--1.1.sql
uuid-ossp.c uuid-ossp.control uuid-ossp--unpackaged--1.0.sql

FWIW Mac is BSD Unix making /usr/local/… the place to put postgres etc.

As mentioned by OP the installation is custom so they may not have followed this convention on their *nix system, and, taking macOS as an example, installations into non standard directories can come against security features.

Please don’t top-post. Inline or bottom posting with trimming is customary
here.

I’m not a source installer (or tar ball binary) expert but you seem
confused by what ./configure ‘s role is in all of this. You claim to have
installed world yet the error message you are seeing clearly indicates the
server in question doesn’t see the compiled extension. And its concept of
where to look for it is vastly different than your own. At this point you
might as well just try copying files around and hoping that it works. But
personally I’d suggest just strictly building from source with your desired
customizations in a controlled (scripted) manner.

Just saying, but this would not have been a problem if you had used the
RPM packages.

I guess you mean you ran "make world"?

It /should/ work if you add --with-uuid=something to the above line,
rerun it and then change intro the contrib/uuid-ossp/ directory and run
"make" followed by "make install" from there. Then, "CREATE EXTENSION"
should work.

However, to be sure, I advise to make a backup of the full (built)
source tree beforehand and to try it on a test/development instance
first.

Which uuid library you prefer (and replace for "something" above) should
be something you can figure out yourself.

I install from source, too. For the extensions that I install, I go into the extensions directory and type "make", followed by "make test", followed by "make install". "make install" will install the extension where it needs to go, assuming your environment is configured properly (check the output of "pg_config" first). After you've successfully "make install", "create extension" in psql should work.

Hope this helps,
Ed

I gave you the solution in a previous mail. You dont need to reinstall
postgresql. You just ./configure --what-ever and then go straight to
compile and install (make install) the contrib module the usual way, (as
root) after you disable USE_PGXS.

Did you try that?

Thanks for the help. I finally found this in the actual PostgreSQL documentation. Unfortunately, it was erroring out when I tried make install within the uuid-ossp directory. I looked into it for a bit, but I had already done a workaround which was a temporary install of the same software with the uuid-sso configure flags and then copy the library file that was missing from this temporary install to the working one. After that, creating the extension was successful. On our next patch cycle, these will automatically be included. Thanks to everyone for responding.
