Tk/Tcl is a language for which PostreSQL offers an interface. Certain
parts of PostgreSQL will not build if Tk/Tcl support is not present.
This should not stop the rest from building.

What is the error?

Searching for "PostgreSQL" and "support" on Google will show you hundreds

I am a newbie and need to find out if PostgreSQL is a good replacement for Oracle. I need to find out the best way to import data from Oracle to PostgreSQL. I also need to find out what the DBA capabilities are of PostgreSQL compared to that of Oracle. This is something that we are looking into immediately for production use.

Install a postgres server and then use pg_restore or psql to restore.
(Which you use depends on what options you used for pg_dump(all).)

Trying out the 8.0.0 beta. This isn't ready for production, but would be
OK for playing around with postgres.

But somebody said me that if I make a backup(pg_dump), drop the database,
create db, an then restore again, tha database is cleaned(recover disk

First its bad style to use a generic subject like "Question". Use
something related to the specific problem. "Help" is an other poor
choice.

Second you need to put in a lot more information about your setup. As an
absolute minimum provide postgresql release and operating system.

Third it sounds like you've got some reading to do. The manual and this
book would be a good place to start:
http://www.faqs.org/docs/ppbook/book1.htm

While you read you should run the command "vacuum analyze", this is
going to take a REALLY LONG time. 12 to 24 hours wouldn't surprise me.
But at least the base will still be online although with degraded
performance.

When you've got a better handle on thing I suggest you do a pg_dumpall,
drop the base and perform a restore.

You are likely to run on a more or less outdated version so while doing
the dump and restore you should consider upgrading to the latest
version. The INSTALL document in the source distro tells how to perform
dump/restore when upgrading.

I'm able to do a dump of a 50Gig base in one hour but the restore time
depends a lot on what sort of index'es you have. Don't hold your breath
waiting. All this depends a lot on what sort of hardware you have.

Cheers,

John

Hi.

I want to find out if postgresql can be used in place of MS SQL?

But I want to find out if I can get SharePoint working on postgre with
out any limitations.

I was given the task to see if there is any other DB that we can run
share point on.

I don't want to try for months and then find out that it can't be done.

So if you guys can just give me a answer on this, it will be great.

Thanks for your help and keep the good work going..

Microsoft makes and sells both of those products, so it's unlikely that
they'll make the database easily replaceable, as forcing you to use MS
SQL server ensures they get maximum income from SharePoint.

I'm not saying it won't work. Just that even if you do get it to work,
it's likely to have some problems here and there. PostgreSQL is NOT a
direct replacement for MS SQL server, and it's not uncommon for someone
to write code that uses some artifact of MS SQL that no other database
supports.

If your boss wants to run SharePoint, I'd suggest running MS SQL
underneath it.

Of course, I'd recommend not running either, having had experience with
both in the past. But that's just me.

 Dear Administrator:

I have a problem developing a ECPG program. I am making a programa using
FETCH, when the second row is sent the following message appear:

==>sqlcode [-213] msg[NULL value without indicator in line 1192.]

My select is:

        EXEC SQL FETCH cursor_onlyweb
        INTO
                :t_token,
                :t_institucion,

                :t_source,

Is it possible to use something similar to "isnull" in Oracle?

Are you looking for the SQL-standard COALESCE?

test=> SELECT COALESCE('foo', 'bar');
 coalesce
----------
 foo
(1 row)

test=> SELECT COALESCE(NULL, 'bar');
 coalesce
----------
 bar
(1 row)

The syntax in Oracle is "is null" or "is not null" as in:

select count(*) from module_master where gatekeeper_status is null;

And yes that does work in PostGreSql. Now if your talking about the
Oracle function NVL, for Null Value, no that does not work and I don't
see a similar function in PostGreSql. You could create one easily
enough.

That works if you want to exclude those rows altogether.

What does NVL do? From the examples I've seen it looks like COALESCE.
Oracle themselves recommends COALESCE:

http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/05-jul/o45sql.html

"Oracle Database supports several functions that are similar to
COALESCE. These include NVL2, NULLIF, and NVL. (Take time to read
about these functions in the Oracle SQL Reference manual.) We
recommend COALESCE over NVL, because COALESCE can handle more than
just two arguments and it's part of the SQL standard. When COALESCE
isn't enough, you may be able to find refuge in CASE expressions,
which are also covered in Oracle SQL Reference."

PostgreSQL supports CASE as well.

I assume this is an appropiate list for this question. I am sure that pg_general would have
worked also. With-out knowing the postgresql pg_* schema very well I can be difficult to
determine queries that will give your this sort of information. In my case I like to cheat.

1) I turn on statement logging.
2) I issue a commands like \d from psql interface
3) Then, I look at the pg_logs to see what sql statement was actually created from "\d"

In your case I would first determine which psql function will give you the information you want
and this use it to give you the query you need.

I hope this helps.

Richard Broersma Jr.

You want to join on pg_class.oid. You can see the info on pg_index here in
the docs: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.1/static/catalog-pg-index.html

select i.indexrelid,c.relname from pg_index i, pg_class c where i.indexrelid =
c.oid;

will likely give you what you're after.

Easier way to cheat:

psql -E dbname

then all the \d commands and what not will spill their secrets right on
the screen. :)

Thank you, Jeff. That worked like a champ. My initial problem
Had to do with not understanding the concept of OID datatypes.
My next learning task is to read up on OID.

Thanks again, Mark

It might be better on pgsql-sql, but I'm not sure.

I think the following query should list clustered indexes for you:-

select * from pg_index
where indisclustered = 't'

Dear all,

I have 2 different Master/Slave with two different databases (DB1 und DB2). My question is: Can I manage them both with one PGPool II? Can PGPool II recognize that the first request should go to the fist Master/Slave because the request talk with DB1 and the 2nd request, which are talk to DB2, should go the 2nd Master/Slave.

Regards
Muthana
