There was two reasons for that: lack of imagination to imagine case with different types of indexed value and column, and we didn't want call some method while index fit in one page. Some discussion on that http://www.postgresql.org/message-id/27542.1323534819@sss.pgh.pa.us http://www.postgresql.org/message-id/4EE77EA1.6030503@sigaev.ru But we was wrong: PostGIS guys found an example: polygon indexing with storing just a bounding box. Actually, I don't know index structure for boxes suitable for SP-GiST but I'm not a geometer. They are. Attached patch provides support of optional compress method for SP-GiST. -- Teodor Sigaev E-mail: teodor@sigaev.ru WWW: http://www.sigaev.ru/ --------------050503020006020301070200 Content-Type: application/x-gzip; name="spgist_compress_method-1.patch.gz" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="spgist_compress_method-1.patch.gz" H4sIACLYO1QAA91X62/aSBD/DH/FNCf1IGDekERRoiIgOdQEEKS9D6cTWuw1 WLG9lr1OWlX9329md014hDRp++mIYu9jZnbnN087nuuCZS09CayaxHZ1wex7 HjpVZts8SapJtPQSSS9HeGHCY1mxYfFayrwXOvwLLNjirMnalUqrUW/WOw7U a7VOq5W3LOv1p+ZLpdIbTv7wAaz6aatdbtSgpAbNU8DFDarClPtMeiIEdc0y zKJrFDSTTHI4TuhVzkMOfxGLeSjPcXIVLONh6AoAOI5iYXs0voDRp5sb3M5b ueoxPuAYboS4hzSCNYNwQa44pHiy5XDXC7kD9kqIhIObhra6hwhtXgYpIGEP XMuxv9o+T/CGitsXIoIF98VjRW1X8UqeC4V3XhKmvl/ExdzGtZRe8yWX2VrB aFpHZSfXw9ndvPfXeDwbzCfTca94ni/lvuG/Ejn2nGHymfmeU9gW4zwjZHw7 mQ5mMy2mWCQZ33L0JDzohZp4CoCYg5cAQ10jUpn5EHC5Eg5pfWSLIIrRpEd4 8yiV4DDJMnZHgCcr8Dcn/T3+wFEakxl3zGUahwk4XAqWSO6s2ZhMg4qZVfVb Pd8I05aG50qCEo3sV8Z8Peb79Z7w/UImp6zo9A/0MdZl7MxxZCOdcr5/av9u kymx+ojv9OA+ughZRHmkdcmkvPsa8Qq+fR7CxQU6ukZ8B/CZh+4EjxyhC/+U 5HlGU1fEwVymkc+1X6FBurdlolwxwlVAwO45JGnMM1kPzE/VzoJ4KHrQfZEv FBIM4udwhXKHdEJfIeMIntDBy5TFLJR8LYwMt22SDMoJhqbk8TWXSkRhcj3v D+7GXbRAv3v36bagwcnQ2Qy436Kt9ft0tZ401ZFqbUYqvH8PL9rT+klQtPl/ TwLSgg5noJIxIA1+LeuQKSHnc+b2jdJKJ0qpzqsrVCo9P/lxeTJkpjbVWaPR 4m6lcuLydq199obalAl6RWHKSKkqnTTLp1DCZ6NhChJatsfsFd8pSEVdfCgn 7LrAey8sll/YtkmcdWmL0PWW5BkUKegbgCTKjGSWONCHYSSEHJ2BLQTmXI6s mE59/oB+rDKwRO/UDpxzPd8nZ+3zxF6fYhy4DDgg2swRf/qwZO1VO4VoS60K uQsdXKRgen4L3l2sb/WUIlUc/mp9w8Qc80hgGzGYTsfTdQ4v8Di2hcNpuTfu D+bD0efuzbA/n3Sn3dvB3WA6x/mnQXHNAcgRJMvCuvxlRc3knCxYmY+r6XJl iiMLHSA9QUOGLQpQrPD4qKhygRL/ssEO4Llde55we4P1kZvc8xDHJEadvjx3 iWi9Q157WMINwyT0rBbZRvHZ7IFVwk8dvh2ilZUJ4AO7Jle4jfopO21WKg5v Ojbr7OeKQ/xPKeIQBWWGxln5BEr4pE41D39ow2dOOBn2Ps4mN8M75YVojuYe yXA0QvfqjUcznA1GhrK1R3cz6F7tkeXaeWubbjTBeNA+2s6XdmRsxQRSdHYp Nrg7lN6xMmHTDN14mQbYTWP5i1NbJoC5gZLgXNvP+L7Co9Usd6DUaiEqOCXn wgMMH7H0FMc4lXn4hr6CEa36usyBzlUSwozIFC8VQC8MsfrpZkAT6mSTMa+d 5we8IQY4KGKdqzJ2E0HPcK8jFQrZ0nNAAmZFDO6ivtRCCD+Xs1k4Ve0tCTwn yePI9hnmCdzB7InAGUxE7C096qkpk26K8EW4/ExtTTL+uCfBFnifR0+udOeT wCXUIWJLlfTh+xbS54cjysYzfbGsoilZsBdRO7smok7aZ5yd1CoVt15fLOon hyNql38/onYp1BegDin9woX+YNabFo6uvdmdrrGg49B43RHlDOypugXd98F4 2MdepHHSakABALHN5WrQAdf8YXkzb3rWiMAw4mjB8ZEQwBZNsbwsPBmwiCaY 5WkDR9guZMOAxfeRSMy+jM14kXq+sx7wIJJf9cy/d7By4rcqzh6YnaYBNmos xJ5PHWgL7FQT6QVMk+gPrgRUO5ABMRwdxCGLZqSZd2/nBAUBkbf2AWrVajUC SGczhKi9hkiDI824pkg0K46eIMIJAqSDS48NWDgxYOEoAwuHGVh6X4NFEhVY 2UCDpWZrsHC2DRYuoEz9Aakmm7jhfBO30it07/xPdc98ZjaxXoyfnTphXIdg wirwH2/LzGpwEgAA --------------050503020006020301070200 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 -- Sent via pgsql-hackers mailing list (pgsql-hackers@postgresql.org) To make changes to your subscription: http://www.postgresql.org/mailpref/pgsql-hackers --------------050503020006020301070200--
