Hi,
I'm having trouble starting PgAdmin.
I'll describe what I have done so far.
1) pgAdmin requires the PostODBC driver which is available here. You must
set check the 'Show Column' and 'Fake Index' options under 'OID Options' for
pgAdmin to work
I have installed the PostODBC driver. I haven't set show column and fake
index because I can't find the OID options.
2) As of v6.3.208, pgAdmin also requires Microsoft's MDAC 2.0 package (the
Redistribution Typical Setup version). This decreases the size of the
pgAdmin download significantly, and helps to eliminate ODBC version conflict
errors.
Done this.
3) Installing Pgadmin.
4) Opening the ODBC 32 panel in the control panel (I'm using 98)
Tab --> user dns -> MS Access driver -> configure --> database select --> In
my case h:\mediatheek.mdb
5) Starting Pgadmin
6) The logon dialog box is in front of me
datasource --> Microsoft Access 97 database.
Username: (none)
Pass: (noneà
7) The program freezes. This happens in 98 and in NT 4.0
Does someone recognize this problem?
Thnx. for the advice that will soon be on it's way (hopefully :o)) )

In the ODBC driver manager, select your postgresql datasource and click
configure. Now click the Datasource button and you should see the OID
Options frame containing 'Show Column' & 'Fake Index'.

I'm assuming you want to migrate the Access Database. If so, don't bother
creating a datasource for it, just open it as a file in the Migration
Wizard - it's more reliable that way.

??? You must select the datasource that points to your PostgreSQL database
here. Enter the username and password as appropriate for that machine.
HTH,
Dave.

Shouldn't you be using a PostgreSQL database as your datasource with
PgAdmin, not MS-Access?

That's new Microsoft installation format. Installer is included with Win
2000 (just double click it). You can download it for other versions. There
are instructions on pgadmin home page.

I am having a problem just getting started with pgAdmin. I am not even able
to create a DSN to get connected. I can connect ok to my PostgreSQL
databases using pgaccess - and of course with psql on the server.
Is there any documentation out there or anyone with some experience using
this tool?
Thanks, Charlie Crissman

Yes! Do you have the PostgreSQL ODBC driver installed?

Dave,
Thanks for the reply.
I downloaded and installed the PostgreSQL ODBC driver (downloaded latest
postdrv.exe and ran it).
I also downloaded and installed the MDAC 2.6.
A couple of questions - what is the difference between a USER DSN and a
SYSTEM DSN? When I attempt to create a new DSN, I choose a name for it, I
enter the server, database name and the port it is running under. When I
hit either the USER DSN or SYSTEM DSN button, I don't get an error. I then
try to login and get a message about the username/password being incorrect.
I am using the same name/password as I use to connect via psql on the
server. I have tried different cases, but still get the same thing.
Even when I edit my pg_hba.conf so that passwords are not required, I get
the same name/password error.
Thanks, Charlie Crissman

Hello
I cannot write new function with local variables:
CREATE FUNCTION "get_new_id1" () RETURNS bigint AS'
declare
id bigint;
begin
id:=nextval(\'id_sequence\'::text);
return id;
end;
'LANGUAGE 'sql' VOLATILE ;
Error message see when compiling:
ERROR: parser: parse error at or near "bigint" at character 16
That I do wrong?

You've declared your function as being written in SQL, and it looks like
it's in PL/pgSQL, the following works for me:
CREATE FUNCTION "get_new_id1" () RETURNS bigint AS'
declare
id bigint;
begin
id:=nextval(\'id_sequence\'::text);
return id;
end;
'LANGUAGE 'plpgsql' VOLATILE ;
You may need to run createlang plpgsql on your database first.
