Hello,

Are there any tools on earth that allow replication between an Access database and a PostgreSQL server ?
I think about things like :
* standalone Windows app that have two ODBC connections and replicate data between the two,
* VBA modules to insert in the Access database,
* other stuff,
I don't necessarily need a true replication. If there are a few impossible things, I could still be OK.

TIA,

You can export the MS Access tables to Postgres as long as the ODBS.exe has been run and set up from the
control panel "32 ODBC" configuration panels that are loaded from the .exe. You will need the Host name,
database name, User and Password, and use the default PostgreSQL Postmaster port number. The Postmaster
has to be running with the database allocated but the table must not already exit. Then do the following:

1) File select "Export as"
2) To an External File or Database
3) Change the "Save as type" to ODBC Databases()
4) Verify the name (all lower case) and click OK
5) Select "DSN Name" to be "MS Access 97 Databases (not sharable).dsn"
6) Click OK

All table names and column names must be lower case (at least for PostgreSQL 6.5.2 running on Solaris).

Cheers,

Allan

This description is a way to export tables from Access to Postgres. I know how to do this.
What I'm looking for is a tool to synchronize the data between the same table inside Access and Postgres, ie : a new record in Postgres should be transfered to Access, and the same the other way.

Thanks.

G'day Nicholas.

You might like to look at the contents of ftp://ftp.sdc.com.au/pub/repl.

It is a general purpose database replicator for any pair of databases which
inderstand ODBC.

Cheers,
Stephen.

If you only need to transfer new rows and don't care about
updated or deleted rows, it's pretty easy to do, especially if you
have an identifier in your table generated by a sequence
(or the date it was inserted).

in Postgres :

table DATA (rowid, other_columns), index on rowid
table LAST_CHECK (rowid) -- one row in this table

select @rowid1=rowid from LAST_CHECK
select @rowid2=max(rowid) from DATA
select * from DATA where @rowid1 < rowid <= @rowid2
update from LAST_CHECK set rowid=@rowid2

(Sybase-like syntax for variables, sorry ...)

And something similar in Access.
You must have a cron job which runs this script periodically
and insert the resultset from the third instruction into Access.
It doesn't need to be transactional.
The both databases should generate identifiers on non-overlapping
ranges, for example negative in Access, replace max by min for the
other script and reverse the comparison order.

Alain

Hi everybody,

Find below an URL in order to download the source code of a VB application
to do a great work : replication...

I tried using the ip addr 195.154.101.195 and get "Forbidden:You don't have
permission to access / on this server." Even adding the rest of the url
gives me a similar error. Is the site not setup properly or can we just
not access it from the US?
