Is there something I'm doing wrong here? I'm running postgresql-7.0.3 on RedHat 7.0 on a Pentium. Many thanks for any tips! How is your client shutting down? Are you calling the Connections close() method? It sounds like the client is closing before the driver has notified the server that it's ending.
