For the moment, 'visual query builder' doesn't save query graphical
layout. I intend to do so for the next releases.

Hope someone can answer this for me. I am not able to delete tables or
queries using the PGAccess program but I have no problems issueing the
drop table foo; statement using the psql interface. I looked at the
stack tarce but it just shows sections of dialog confirmation boxes in
the source using the .84 version of pgaccess, tried it with the
previous version of PGAccess with the same results.

Furthermore I have found a problem using the varchar type and declaring
the field length in the entry box. I have to actually enter varchar(#)
in the type entry pulldown box to avoid errors.

What may not be related to pgaccess I have found it impossible to name
a table field 'desc' it gives errors in pgaccess and the psql interface.

If anyone has information on sources for other Data types please point
me to the URL or FTP site so I may download them. I do not have the text
type available for use with postgres or some of the other types listed
in pgaccess.

Thanks In Advance - Richard

Yes. PgAccess need libpgtcl.so and libpq.so to be in the system /lib
directory.

PostgreSQL 6.3.2 had a little bug that was quickly fixed. He didn't
define LINUX_ELF and the Makefile refused to generate the shared
libraries (so).

A quick patch is to edit those Makefile's in src/interfaces/libpq and
src/interfaces/libpgtcl.so and insert a single line at the begining
LINUX_ELF = true.

Also, I understood that an official patch for this bug has been
released.

In RedHat 5.0, they decided to move the crypt function used by postgres
from the libc library to a separate library libcrypt.so You will need
to add -lcrypt when linking libpgtcl.

Please let me know if you have solved the problem.

That's exactly the answer I wanted to the question, where are the shared
libaries? Thanks, Constantin!

I think I ran into a similar problem a few months back with some other
software I was installing completely unrelated to postgres, and
discovered this. I'll put in those fixes. Thanks again.

I had same problem. i commented the line "load ..." and used a itk
version which is already linked with libpg stuff.

however if you are on linux,... theres is a libpgtcl.so available which
you can download from
    www.flex.ro/pgaccess

but there is no .so versions for other machines....gues you have to
do a hand job again....

It's an older one. It's for PostgreSQL 6.2.1 and RedHat 4.2

Maybe I should deliver also version already compiled for PostgreSQL
6.3.1 and RedHat 4.2 and 5.0 but ... had no time!

At the very least, you might want to just make a note of the fixes you
gave to me on your website, or make the patch available.

I am having a problem with the PgAccess interface for postgreSQL. I
have the libraries libpgtcl.so and libpq.so (which I downloaded from
www.flex.ro both redhat-4.2-pg-6.3.2-libpgtcl.so and
redhat-4.2-pg-6.3.2-libpq.so) and installed them into both /usr/lib and
/lib. I then tried to run your app with gave me the following output.

$wish -f pgaccess.tcl
couldn't load file "libpgtcl.so": File not found
     while executing
"load libpgtcl.so"
     (procedure "main" line 3)
     invoked from within
"main $argc $atgv"
     file "pgaccess.tcl" line 4606

I have the postmaster running and everything checks out fine. When I do a
find for it it finds it in the /lib folder...does anyone know what could
be the matter?

Thanks
Michael

I am sure that this has been covered in the list before, but I cannot find
an archive, so here goes again.

I have Redhat Linux 6.0 with Postgresql installed and working with psql. I
want to try pgaccess, but when I run it, I get the following error:

Error in startup script: couldn't load file "libpgtcl.so": libpg.so.1:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    while executing
"load libpgtcl.so"
    (procedure "main" line 6)
    invoked from within
"main $argc $argv"
    (file "/usr/bin/pgaccess" line 4954)

I downloaded the current version of pgaccess, and the readme said that all
I needed to do was copy the .so files from the ftp.flex.ro/pgaccess site
and copy them to the /usr/lib directory. I did that but still get the
above error. What am I doing wrong?

Have you tried running ldconfig? You have to do this as

The PostgreSQL RPM's shipped with RedHat 6.0 have a problme -- and
that's the problem. You can upgrade to the beta test 6.5.1 rpms (there
are two sets -- one on ftp.postgresql.org, and one on
http://www.ramifordistat.net -- either will fix this annoyance.). Be
sure to read my rpm upgrade notes on
http://www.ramifordistat.net/postgres/rpm_upgrade.html first, as there
are some trickinesses involved. And be sure to realize that these RPM's
are beta quality -- but, then again, most of the RPM's that have been
built for PostgreSQL by both RedHat and third parties have not exactly
been top quality. RedHat has a bug report on this on their bugs site.

pgaccess is really cool. I'm introducing it to some fairly
computer-naive users, and they don't understand how things work very
well. I'm concerned that they'll fill out a form, and forget to
update the database. Is there any way to set a "changed" variable, so
that I could pop up a window if they have changed any of the fields?
Also, it would be *much* better of the search results were updated if
the user presses "update". Much, much better.

I'm not on the list; please cc responses to me.

Morning,

We are trying to get pgaccess to run on win32 machines. We have one nt 4.0
sp3 machine and one win95B sp2 machine. Both machines have tcl 8.2
installed. The tcl and tk demos that came with the binary package work
flawlessly on both machines.

When we try to run pgaccess from the nt machine we get the following error:

"Couldn't load file "libpgtcl.dll": invalid argument

while executing
"load libpgtcl.dll"
(procedure "main" line 4)
invoked from within
"main $argc $argv

(file "W:\postgres\pgaccess.tcl" line 5044)

The 95 macine produces the same error with its file location.

The .dll files are in the system 32 directory of WINNT and they are in the
Windows directory of 95. The files are duplicated in the same directory as
pgaccess.tcl. I really don't think this is a path problem but I am at a
loss to what else the problem could be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Rob

Well, this seems unlikely from the error message, but try specifying the
path explicitly. Use the windows find to find libpgtcl.dll and use
something like

load c:\path\to\lib\dir\libpgtcl.dll

I would imagine that it is in c:\windows\system or something, although I'm
not sure. Alternatively I think you can set the library directory in wish
with something like
set tk_library "c:\path\to\lib\dir"

After solving that problem (a PATH to libpgtcl.dll problem I think) take
into account that in win32 you should get the suitable DLL's for the
Tcl/Tk version and PostgreSQL backend version.

As I know, there are new DLL's only for Tcl/Tk 8.0.x/PostgreSQL 6.5.1
and Tcl/Tk 8.1.x/PostgreSQL 6.5.1

For the 8.2 , not yet. Even in Linux, I didn't succeed to start PgAccess
with Tcl/Tk 8.2 :-(

A wild guess without trial, but windows progs can get funny about file
extensions. The .dll is maybe assumed. Try changing "load libpgtcl.dll" to
"load libpgtcl".

For Pgaccess which I downloaded from the web and try to use with the
Postgresql 6.4 and Linux Redhat 6.0 I encounter difficulties for installing
Pgaccess.
Please can you tell me wich version of Pgaccess I can use with Postgresql,
Redhat 6.0 and Gnome.
For Pgaccess under Windows NT the application seems to work, I only can't
connect with Postgresql database server.
I have no idee of making this work, can you give me some advise for this.

Hi,

I've installed postgreSQL on my RH6.0

Everythind id ok, I can run the client,
execute single queries, and so on.
Pgaccess starts up,
but when I give the name of the
database and try to open it,
I get
"Error connecting database  connectDB() failed.
Is the postmaster runnung and accepting connections
at localhost on port 5432?"

The postmaster is running fine.

Thanks,

I've just installed PgAccess for Windows (w95), and I'm connected to a
Samba server on a Linux box (RHL 6.0), which also runs PostgreSQL 6.4.2

I've previously installed Tcl/Tk 8.0.4 for windows, and I followed the
steps recommended for installing PgAccess in that configuration.

My computer is a dual (W95/Linux) machine, and from Linux I can easily
connect to the other machine (which hosts the pgsql server) with psql.

However, when I try to connect from w95 using PgAccess, using the same
options (host, database, user, pwd) as when using psql, it gives an error
message:

"PostgreSQL error message:Connection to the database failed
User authentication failed"

Why does that happen, since I use the same options I use from Linux ?

Seems pretty strange for two romanians speaking english on the
PostgreSQL interfaces list in order to help each other :-) but ...

If everything is ok (match for PostgreSQL backend + Tcl/Tk version +
DLL's) then my first thought is :

do you have the same IP address on the win95 as for Linux?

Second idea: give full access for the whole class with trust to all
databases on the PostgreSQL server in order to check if it works!

Then ... (write directly to me teo@flex.ro) :-)

Best regards,
Teo

Yes, the Linux version on the same computer works fine (psql and
PgAccess)

After some messages, Andrei discovered that he set up Windows to get
automatically the IP adress from the DHCP daemon on Linux.
Now he put the IP address manually the same as on Linux and PgAccess
under win32 works fine for him now!

Hi,
I have recently installed postgres 7.0 and am trying to use pgaccess.
However, everytime i start pgaccess i get an error messages "Error in
startup sscript: couldn't load file "libpgtcl.so": libpgtcl.so: cannot
open shared object file: no such file or directory" However doing a
find i can see libpgtcl.so in the /usr/gnu1 directory. I don't now
where to go.

  Any help is highly appreciated.

thanks

What OS do you have?
Are there some RPM's for your OS?

Try

  setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/gnu1

(or whatever directory the library is actually in).

Matt,

Did you check the installation instructions at the end of the page -

http://www.pgaccess.org/index.php?page=DownloadPgAccess

If you still experience troubles, you can write to users@pgaccess.org (see
how to subscribe here -

http://www.pgaccess.org/index.php?page=MailingLists )

At least your e-mail made me realize that there is no HowtoInstall link on
the first page. Adding it now.

Iavor

Hello!
I am trying to install completes version of Pgaccess in a server linux but it appears the following error:
Can´t load files usr/lib/libpgtcl.so........................
undefined symbol: lo_export
I added in the Makefile - lcrypt because "libpgtcl.so" did not have library, nevertheless, now appears east error. As I can solve it?
Thanks

I'm not sure if you got an answer...I missed this
posting. For pgaccess, you can go here:
www.pgaccess.org. For a list of GUI clients, you can
go here:

http://techdocs.postgresql.org/v2/Guides/PostgreSQL%20GUI%20Tools/document_view
