I'll take a good guess based on what little information you have provided. I will
assume the you ran a query which requested a large chunk of that 40 meg table. The perl
interface uses libpq. And libpq slurps the entire query result into memory before
passing control back to the users code. This is a weakness of this library. May I
suggest that you declare a cursor and request the data in chunks. (fetch 100 rows at a
time) If you use a cursor and fetch only one row at a time you may be disappointed in
the performance.

Hello,
How do I got about setting up Perl/postgres so that I can use Perl as an
interface. I have some old scripts that have the line "use POSTGRES" at the
beginning, but I have no idea where these libraries are coming from or how
to set them up.
Thanks.

I too had various problems trying to install Pg, until I realized that
you can actually build Postgres and it will install it for you. I
forget what the switch is
you have to give the configure script but it is in the docs.
Hope this helps...james

Hi!
Sorry, i guess this problem has been posted before...
I tried installing postgres and it looks fine, my problem now is i want
PERL to communicate to my postgres database. I download some modules from
CPAN and tried installing them, unfortunately i encountered this problem
which i don't know when installing Postgres-1.4.tar.gz.
Checking if your kit is complete...
Looks good
Note (probably harmless) : No library found for -lpq
I already installed DBI-1.06.tar.gz and DBD-Pg-092.tar.gz prior to this.
By the way i'm using Linux 2.0.35 kernel.
Please help...

See the Free Pascal page. A great cross-platform compiler, both Borland
Pascal & Delphi compatible.
http://tfdec1.fys.kuleuven.ac.be/~michael/fpc/
On the contributed units page, you will find a postgres unit, which is a
pascal wrapper for libpq (postgres 'c' library). I have been using this for
about a year now on Linux. Works wonderfully and allows me to stay with the
language of my choice ;-). GPC is another cross-platform compiler more
focused on portability than FPC. It can also wrap 'c' libraries, but I have
no experience with it yet.
Cheers!

Just change that $ret to @ret, and it will return the entire row.
After that your code becomes something like:
$query = "Select
username,password,knickname,emailaddy,forward,ip,date from temp";
$conn = Pg::connectdb("dbname=$dbname");
$result = $conn->exec($query);
while (@row = $result->fetchrow) {
@row = join("|", @row);
}
for $member (@set) {
print "$member\n";
}
or:
$query = "Select
username,password,knickname,emailaddy,forward,ip,date from temp";
$conn = Pg::connectdb("dbname=$dbname");
$result = $conn->exec($query);
while (@row = $result->fetchrow) {
print join("|", @row) . "\n";
}
You might want to add an error check on the Connection. (i.e. check the
value of $conn before using it).
Hope this helps...james

Robert,
have you seen DBI/DBD perl interface to PostgreSQL ?
I'd recommend you to try it.
Your script looks like (not tested):
------------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/perl
use DBI;
my $dbname = 'test';
my $query = "Select username,password,knickname,emailaddy,forward,ip,date from temp";
$dbh = DBI->connect("dbi:Pg:dbname=$dbname") or die $DBI::errstr;
my $sth = $dbh->prepare ( $query ) or die "Can't prepare statement: $DBI::errstr\n\t$query";
$sth->execute() or die "Can't execute statement: $DBI::errstr\n\t$query";
while ( my @ary = $sth->fetchrow() ) {
print join("\|",@ary),"\n";
}
$sth->finish or die $DBI::errstr;
Regards,
Oleg

Afternoon,
Something that's been driving me a little buggy maybe someone Out
There can shed some light...
We use postgres for user management on linux systems. Nothing fancy
about the fields, just username,password,lastname,firstname etc.
Traditionally I've used the shell psql function:
@exec = `psql -A -d users -t -q -c "Select * from temp"`;
Weeellll now I'm running into server timeouts on the box. The
adminmstration box does see a fair amount of load. We use sql
extensively and consequently we ahve a large number of cron jobs that
fire up psql shells. I had thought using the methods found in pg would
help. I am planning to port our applications over to C but... that's a
several month job. I'm looking for a quick fix here to buy me some
time. The other side of that is C is not my preferred language of
choice... I do pascal and perl.
I am not clear yet as how to navigate multiple rows on the recordset
return using the pg method. Ideally I want to put all the results into
an array like this:
username|password|lastname
marty|next|Robinson
mel|foreman|Johnson
The <$ret = $result->fetchrow> function only returns a portion of the
row.
I have created a lttle subroutine using the getvalue method that
iterates thru each row and pushes it into an array. This will work for
now. However I am curious, is there another, more simpler method to
accomplish this?
Thanks,
-Rob

$fields = $result->nfields;
$count = 0;

Looks like you caught my "|" error (-; Seriously, I though the
following should do it:
while (@row = $result->fetchrow) {
$string = join("\|",@row);
push @set, ($string);
}
If though you wanted to put them in a multidimensional array (well
really a list of references to lists then you would do something like:
while (@row = $result->fetchrow) {
push @set, (@row);
}
and then you would reference each element like this:
$set[$i][$j]
or:
$set[$i]->[$j]
depending on your mood.

Sorry I did not catch up with the original question; I believe things
you discuss here are better answered by reading "man perldata" or "man
perlref". But let me make a few comments, anyway.

{push @set, ($string)} is the same as {push @set, $string} or {push (@set, $string)}
{push @set, (@row); is the same as {push @set, @row} or {push @set, $row[0], $row[1], ...}
There is no such thing as multidimensional array in perl.
One can simulate multidimensional arrays by using arrays of
references. You probably wanted to say,
push @set, [@row];
or
push @set, \@row;

which would now now be true.

Morning,
I use the Pg.pm module to access a postgres database (postgres 6.5.1)
How can I get perl to pull the field names from a table?
For example, lets say I have diffrerent tables. I want one script to pull
the field names, not necessarily the values, from those 5 tables. Any ideas?
Thanks,

This isn't specifically a perl question, it's just a matter of knowing
which system tables to look in. Try
select attname from pg_attribute, pg_class where
attrelid = pg_class.oid and attnum > 0 and relname = 'XXX';
BTW, it's easy to explore the system tables in psql. Use \dS to get
a list of system tables, and then \d and normal SQL commands to look
at any of them that sound interesting. Or look at the definitions in
pgsql/src/include/catalog/.

Hello!
I would like to extract data from my postgreSQL7.0 database and present
them on a web-page. I want to use CGI scripts written in Perl. How do I
connect to and query the DB from Perl? A reference to a tutorial or some
sort of documentation would be highly appreciated! :))
I am familiar with both Perl and databases.

I don't know if the module has been updated for PG7.0 or not, but the
standard way of doing this is through the Perl DBI (database interface).
There is an O'Reilly book called Programming the Perl DBI which is very
clear and covers the topic in pretty good depth. There are also several
good online resources, the URLs of which I can't recall. Several of them
were mentioned in the comments of a recent review of Programming the Perl
DBI on Slashdot (http://slashdot.org).

HI,
I am having trouble building the PERL interface. I don't have ucbcc on my
system and I
was wondering of this component can be built with gcc.
