I've written several times and seen others write as well, but I'm
getting no answers.
What is going on with PostODBC? I'm seeing several people saying
.21 and others saying .30a or .30b and I lately see .35... Is
anything compiled ready to be downloaded?
I need to connect to PostgreSQL 6.3 with ODBC, and I want to use
crypt with usernames and passwords. I hope I can do this...if not,
How far away are we, and If I'm on the wrong mailing list, then where
SHOULD I be?

Julie has been indisposed with various things over the past week
or so, and is hoping to be back in full swing this coming week...the last
I heard, she had one bug left to work out in the sources, that caused a
'malloc()' failure (don't ask me details, I don't know them)...
The most current sources available are in v6.3 (available != what
Julie is working with)...unlike the PostgreSQL stuff, the PostODBC stuff
pretty much has one person working on it. Anyone here know enough about
Windows to be able to lend a hand?
It sort of falls under the same rules as PostgreSQL...if you want
it fixed now, offer a hand...there has got to be someone else, other then
Julie that a) knows something about Windows programming and b) wants/needs
the ODBC driver working...isn't there? *raised eyebrow*

I have been experiencing problems trying to import PostgreSQL table
definitions through ODBC into a data dictionary within q Clarion development
system. It now looks as though Clarion can only deal with 16-bit ODBC links.
Is there such a thing as a 16-bit ODBC driver for PostgreSQL, or does my
question show a lack of understanding of the linking of ODBC components?
TIA for any help.

I can not seem to connect to the postgresql database through ODBC. I keep
getting a message from MS Access that ' can't connect to server'. I can
connect OK through a telnet session and have verified that the server is on
the correct socket. Can someone tell me what I am missing here? Thanks!!

Hi,
I am the coordinator and lead developer of the unixODBC Project (
http://www.genix.net/unixODBC ). I visited here a few months ago with
the intention of getting the PostgreSQL ODBC driver to work in unixODBC.
I passed the effort on but it seems that it is not getting done so I am
back again with the intention of doing it over the next day or two.
I expect the changes to be minimal but they may affect a number fo files
so I would like to get cvs read/write access to the source instead of
doing diffs or whatever. NOTE: I do not plan on making any changes
affecting MS Windows users.
If this does not seem like a good idea to the people here then I will
start a code fork... a UNIX specific version of the driver.
Please advise...

I say go for it! Since the driver was successfully modified to work with
both MS and IODBC, then it seems to me you shouldn't have to make a code
fork for this either.

At hub.org, there is a cvs module for this. Marc gave me a login there so I
could update it. BUT, I don't think I have the latest updates in there.
The latest source is only available as a zip from the old insight website
(http://www.insightdist.com/psqlodbc).
Can you give me till this evening to put the latest updates in there?

That would be great. I will also need read/write access.
Please forward this info to me as-soon-as-you-can. I have a window of time to do
this work now and I am anxious to get on it.

I think you need to talk to Marc Fournier about that. He could give you the
details about a login and cvs and all that jazz. I'm not sure what his email is.
It might be scrappy@hub.org but I'm not totally sure.

I'm not sure what UnixODBC is, but does it try to be
compatible/consistant with IODBC? Is it a successor, or replacement?
Can I use it on my ApplixWare installation, which already knows about
IODBC? Just curious... Your url isn't available to me at the moment.
> Do you have a cvs server for this?
You can get read access to cvs using anonymous or using cvsup (much
preferred if you are going to be working over an extended time). Check
the web site or the CVS_FAQ for details, and ask questions on the
list.
I'm sure Byron and I would be happy to test any patches you might
have, or just send tarballs while you're sorting it out. Cary O'Brien
would probably be willing to participate also. Cary?
Regards.

Hmm...
Time is limited, so I will try to be honest about how much
I can contribute.
But sure, I can try to test a new odbc driver w/ Applixware and
PostgreSQL. I can easily test on glibc machines, but it is harder
for me to test on libc5 machines. All are Intel architecture.
BTW, my current email address is cobrien@radix.net (the stinkers
at digex cancelled the shell accounts!).

Cary,
unixODBC Beta is out and it includes the changed (slightly) sources for PostgreSQL
ODBC driver. Please test it if you have the time.... perhaps Byron or Thomas will
also test it and then get it checked into cvs (I do not have write access)?
Thanks!

Read-only anonymous-CVS access is available, see the website for
details. Write access is held a little more closely ;-). Please submit
your patches as diffs to the pgsql-patches mailing list.

Ok. So how about this... I have the latest zip of the sources so I will make
all changes required and then send a zip back to someone here for testing,
acceptance and cvs update?
I do not have to have write access if you want to do this. I just want to
make sure that no one else is making changes to the source over the next day
or two.
Is this ok? Its actually easier for me. Who will accept the submission?

Thomas,
Has anyone taken the time to apply the unixODBC changes to the PostgreSQL
ODBC driver. I ask because I would like to email a couple of more changes
but it would only make sense if the previous changes have been applied.
Peter Harvey
BTW: You guys should consider giving out cvs write access for those of us
that do not do patch submissions... anyway; current set of changes are tiny
so I will email them if you want them (they are based upon the previous,
wide spread changes I made earlier). Otherwise we are heading down the road
of a code fork <groan>.

Not that I know of. We have been busy preparing for a release and do
not have time to chase around your proposed changes. Someone might
have time later.

Well, "those of us that do not do patch submissions" end up not
contributing much code! We have a relatively small group of folks
privileged to make direct cvs updates, and they have been given that
privilege after working with the code and submitting patches for an
extended period of time.
Byron is the keeper of the ODBC code, and in fact does his work
outside of the Postgres source tree since his development target is
WIN32. The last time I looked the unixODBC drivers were claiming alpha
or beta status, and it seemed a bit early to jump on integrating that
code base into the Postgres production tree.
I support your goal of avoiding a code fork, but imho you will need to
do a bit of work to: 1) send your changes, rather than sending a URL;
2) explain your changes if they are not small, self-evident patches;
3) work with Byron to ensure that the changes are compatible with his
code and the direction it is taking.
Regards.

Clarification; some unixODBC components are Beta, a few are even Alpha, but
most is Beta... including the PostgreSQL driver. Remember; the PostgreSQL
driver in unixODBC is Byrons driver with some enhancements.

Ok. I will email a gz file with all changes and an explanation (to Thomas).
Please take the time to apply the changes. These changes are mostly for
making PostgreSQL work with StarOffice.

*scratch head* the proper method of submitting *any* changes is to send a
patch file to the maintainer of that area of the code, in this
case...Byron, not Thomas. Thomas is involved in *alot* of things, whereas
Byron is dedicated to the ODBC code...
Even better is to send a copy of the patch to pgsql-patches *and* the
maintainer, just in case the maintainer is away ...
Note that a .gz file (assuming its a replacement of files, vs just a
compressed patch) is, IMHO, *not* acceptable, since it becomes hellish to
review before inclusion...

HI i have a couple of basic and specific questions about odbc access using
Access 97. First of all, when i try to add a entry in my access database
that is connected to my posgres database i get an error that says "ERROR:
parser: attribute 'salary' is of type 'money' but expression is of type
'float8' you will need to rewrite or cast the expression how can i fix t his
so that i am able to add entries to the postgres database? I directly linked
these tables with the odbc driver for postgres. Second think is why would
you ever want to include the OID section...i noticed there is a option to
include it in the connection options of the ODBC driver and can't see why
you would want to do this if your keys are set up properly? The next thing i
want to ask is would you evern want to include the pg_* tables in your
access database? I can't see why you would want to? and the last question
is...is there anyway to import relationship type of data into access using
the odbc driver so you don't have to set it up manually through access?
thanks

Look at my web site:
www.sevainc.com/Access
This talks about some of the issues I faced with Access97. I had to make
all currency data types a double in version 6.4 of Postgres. In version
6.5, the numeric data type is a much better choice. You will need to
re-establish your links after making data type changes. Access97 remembers
the data types of ODBC connections between sessions. As for primary keys,
both of the following need to be set up:
1) the ODBC driver needs to have the use unique keys option turned
on
2) you need to have a unique key index installed on each table.
I have not figured out how to automatically import relationships. I have
found that they are not necessary in most situation so I have chosen to
ignore them.
Thanks, Michael

Hello I recently installed the Insight Distribution System's ODBC driver.
I have installed the driver, and I am attempting to access a postgres database located on an OpenBSD server
via a VB5 program called Visdata.exe.
The program recognises the odbc driver but continually requires me to 'register' the odbc details.
Has anyone managed to connect to postgres via visdata.exe? I would be intrigued to know how?
Regards Stephen

yep, it works pretty well. I did nothing more than the standard procedure
to connect to the server i.e. creation of a DSN and use of it in visdata.
Bye!

Hi,
I've some (only one actually) problems with the conversion
from Access to PostgreSQL. The table and columnnames
of the Access database do have sometimes capitals (ThisTable, ThisColumn).
If I convert this table or row, the table and row are created but I cann't
access them. It lookes like the postgress engine converts automaticly all
names to lowercase. If a table is created the conversion to lowercases
doesn't occur.
Am I doing something wrong, or need the postgress ODBC-driver be changed?
TIA
Willem

Initally I've done that too, but I have to convert several databases.
PostgreSQL does support longvar fields for string longer that 255, does it??

Yes, that's correct.
I was using linked tables to Access and when my psql db ended up with
fields longer than 255 it gave me error on that line.
Also, prior to converting my Access db using pgAdmin it wouldn't work
so I had to enter my Access db and cut down on fields exceeding 255.

hi folks,
more and more software packages are relying on odbc 3.0
was wondering if when the unix odbc with postgresql was
expected to be up to the odbc 3.0 specs.
thanks in advance.

The unixODBC package includes an ODBC-3 driver for PostgreSQL. It is
GPL'd, and thus can't be directly included in our tree. But, it's out
there.

I'm very biginner of postgresql.
Now I'm trying to execute stored procedure at postgresSQL through the ODBC
from ASP.
But every try I got this error message below.
"Error while executing the query;ERROR:parser:parse error at or near
....(procedure name)"
Client OS is NT Server4.0.
Is it possible to execute stored procedure from ASP with ODBC driver?
If there is someone who know this, please teach me.
thanks

Hello,
I've notice that the primary key off the postgres table wasn't recognize
by the odbc interface.
When I try to attache a postgres table to an access database I must
specify a primary key for the table but the table already had a primary
key.
I do this with sql server and mySql it work fine, but not with postgres.
perhaps this feature should be added.
I'm using postgre 7.2 and odbc 6.50.00.00
ciao

Saludo

When run through bablefish (bablefish.altavista.com) this is the
translation to English.. not perfect but good enough I guess ;)

Hello, I am using the poststoneware that comes by defect in Conectiva
5,00, I believe that it is poststoneware 6,5,2, but have a problem with
connection ODBC.
The package of ODBC installs it of the RPM that comes with the Conectiva.
The subject is that when I accede from VISUAL BASIC 6,0, does not let to
me make neither a DELETE, nor UPDATE nor INSERT, because it opens
recordset single of reading.
The questions are:
1, This badly formed the poststoneware in linux?
2, This badly installed odbc.ini in Windows?
3, Because it only opens of reading? If algun could facilitate me material
to be able to work with the poststoneware estare very been thankful.

hi, i have a postgresql db set up on a linux server
i can access it w/o a problem from that machine, but when i try to access it from odbc, i get an error
it says it cannot find a 'pg_hda.conf' entry for [IP Address], [User], [Database]
i set up the pg_hda.conf to accept a given range of IP's or tried to at least.

Did you restart the server after changing the config?
And if that does not help post the contents.

First, make sure you're using the correct pg_hba.conf in the postgres
data directory! Then restart postgres server to bring changes in effect.
Second, you will need to create a data base user using the 'createuser'
command. Use your logon name on the remote machine as the user
name to create.
If you have successfully connected to the database you still can run
into trouble if you forgot to allow access to the records in your
data base. Use 'GRANT SELECT ON <table> TO <user>' as a minimum
access-level.
If you have no success with that, please post your pg_hba.conf and
the concrete values for "[IP Adress], ..." from above. And specify your
odbc client machine (just guessing: Windows, Access ???)
Regards
Andreas

Please, can anybody help too ???
I've installed Postgres 7.2.1 from RedHat 7.3 and received the same
error message below.
I have pg_hba.conf in '/usr/share/pgsql/data" and "var/lib/pgsql/data",
but this message persists !!!
I'm not using odbc !! I use zeos (a connect tool for Delphi) !!! It
allways work fine, but with 7.2.1 not !!! thanks
