What version of the JDK have you got, and did you use make to compile?

Sorry, but JDK1.0.2 isn't supported. You'll need JDK 1.1 or later for the
driver to work.

It's dependent on several new features like inner classes, but mainly the
JDBC API is different between the two major versions of the JDK.

The java.math and java.sql are two of several new packages that are
included in the 1.1 JDK.

I compiled the example imageview and need to hit init_db twice to get
it to create the table. I also made my own program to create a table
thru one button and drop the same table thru another button, and it
does the same thing. I need to press the button twice to get it to
add or drop the table. Like it's not doing the commit?

Hmmm, it should be. I was planning (if I had time) of rewriting the
examples other than ImageViewer. I've added it to my list of things to fix
in 7.0

Hi,

Could someone make an educated suggestion which JDBC driver would work best
with the PostgreSQL 7.0.2 database???

The one supplied. :-) If you have the source, go into src/interfaces/jdbc
and type "make jdbc1" or "make jdbc2"

A postgresql.jar is generated. The JDBC driver is org.postgresql.Driver.

The one supplied with 7.0.2?

Seriously, apart from 6.5.3, the driver thats released with the backend is
normally the better one to use.

I'm having trouble getting the postgresql jdbc driver to work. Here's my error:
java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver
        at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java, Compiled Code)
        at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java, Compiled Code)
        at DBBean.<init>(DBBean.java, Compiled Code)
        at DBBean.main(DBBean.java, Compiled Code)

I'm running Linux with the 1.2.2 jdk.
I'm running pgsql 7.0.2.

CLASSPATH=/usr/lib/pgsql/jdbc7.0-1.2.jar:.

Any help would be appreciated.

Wayne

Did you use 'Class.forName("org.postgresql.Driver")', to preload the
driver prior to calling getConnection?

Maybe you had the same naming issue I found (see below).

Subject: JDBC documentation error

Hi Peter,

I'm just getting started with postgres and JDBC. I wanted to mention
a documentation error that might cause considerable pain for other
newbies like me :)

You have:

In the first method, your code implicitly loads the driver using the
Class.forName() method. For Postgres, you would use:

Class.forName("postgresql.Driver");

In using this, my application kept crashing (of course it should have
given me an error message, but for some reason it just crashed). I
finally got things working by changing it to

Class.forName("org.postgresql.Driver");

Thanks for all your work,

John DeSoi, Ph.D.

I would be very hapy if I could use Serialization into postgtres db.
I have read all docs that are in distribution. More than that ... I looked at
sources of JDBC driver. Still nothing .

IS THRE ANY HELP, EXAMPLE, OR TUTORIAL ABOUT
Class Serialize ?
How to use it ?
What should be called firs Serialize.create() or new Serialize ?

I will be very thankfull for any help!

I'm testing the jdbc with postgresql (I have Forte for J), but the primary
key of my table isn't visible and is impossible add, edit ecc ecc. I have
PGSQL 7.01 and use the correct driver. I have to install 7.1 ?

Primary Key support (in JDBC) is part of 7.1 (and was working when I looked
this morning).
