Hello,
I need help with date.
create table blah
(
custnum int,
startdate date,
enddate date
);
How do I get the "real date" to insert to startdate when
the data is entered?
insert into blah
(custnum, startdate, enddate)
values
(001,???,'NULL');
I need a way to fill in the '???' field.
In oracle I could use
select sysdate from dual;

First, I recommend that you use datetime, not date. Date is a limited type,
and has less options.
That said, you can use either:
insert into blah
(custnum, startdate, enddate)
values
(001, 'now', null);
Or
values
(001, current_date, null);
See the manpage "pgbuiltin".

Thank you for all your helps.
The 'datetime' is indeed a better choice.
The 'now' is the answer for my question.
Now, I have one question, that I think it is wierd.
create table blah
(
custnum int,
startdate datetime default datetime(now()),
enddate datetime
);
FIRST:
insert into blah
(custnum, enddate)
values
(1,'01-JAN-00');
SECOND:
insert into blah
(custnum, enddate)
values
(1,'01-01-00');
THIRD:
insert into blah
(custnum, enddate)
values
(1,'01-01-2000');
FOUR:
insert into blah
(custnum, enddate)
values
(custnum, '01012000');
The first, second and third does the right thing, which is tyring to insert
01 JANUARY 2000, the result in postgres is :
Sat Jan 01 00:00:00 2000
However, the fourth is wrong, the result in postgres is :
Wed Aug 02 00:00:00 0102
Could someone tell me why?

I have a table like this :
table books (name varchar , return_date date)
The field return_date is not initialized :
insert into books values (name1);
insert into books values (namex);
The field return_date is updated when the books is returned like this :
update books set return_date='10-06-1999' where name=xxx;
How can i select all the item where the return_date is not updated ?
a request like this :
select * from books where return_date='' ????
(actually i initialised the return_date with the values '01-01-0001')
thank you.

I don't recognise the format you are using, but in standard SQL:
template1=# select CURRENT_DATE as now,
template1-# CAST (CURRENT_DATE + INTERVAL '7 days' AS DATE) as week;
now | week
------------+------------
2001-01-24 | 2001-01-31
(1 row)
Use to_char() for date formatting.

I have o big problem!
I have a table which has a field by date type.
The date format is mm/dd/yyyy.
When I'm doing this select:
select da from a where da='03-31-2002';
the result is :
03-30-2002
03-30-2002
03-30-2002
I repet: only on '03-31-2002'!
What's going on?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Cristi,
"looking for a Date" means something slightly different in
the english language, and if your database is of the opposite
gender, no wonder that it's a bit confused ;-)
Never mind, could you give us a bit more detailed
information? What's the PostgreSQL version and the output of
"show datestyle"?

Try
select to_char( '1969-10-22'::date, 'YYYY-MM-DD');

Recent versions of glibc broke mktime() for dates before 1970.
There is a workaround for this silliness in Postgres 7.2.3.

Hello,
How can I write an sql query in postgresql so that I can insert a date into
a table in the format DD-MM-YYYY, and when I select the date from the table
I should get the date in the same format.

You can't define the format in the db, but you can define the
output-format with to_char(date, 'DD-MM-YYYY');

You could also try using the data_part() function:
date_part('month',date)||-||date_part('day',date)||-||
date_part('year',date)
But I think Andreas' suggestion is a bit more elegant.

Setting the DateStyle parameter may also be of use, particularly on the
input side.
