I had installed postgresql 6.4.2 at solaris 7 on i386 machines . When i bring up the postmaster, it prompt a message "ld.so.1: postmaster: fatal: libncurses.so.4: open failed: No such file or directory". I did find for this libncurses.so.4 but there is no such file.

Anybody can give solution.

Thanks.

What is the schema of the table in question, does it have any references

I'll bet you have a foreign-key constraint between a varchar field and
a bpchar field in another table.

	You need a Servlet container to process jsp files and PostgreSQL does
not have a Java virtual machine. But you can use PostgreSQL from your Java
program by using JDBC.
	Look for Jakarta/Tomcat for an open source servlet container.

What do you mean 'call a JSP file'? A JSP file is parsed and compiled by
something like Jasper or JServ and and is served through a web server like
Tomcat or Tomcat with Apache.

Now, you CAN use jdbc in JSP files and access PostgreSQL databases that
way. For that, you need to take a look at the jdbc documentation.

Probably the easiest way to do this is to write a script and run it from
cron. For example, if your update query is in a file called
$HOME/bin/monthend.sql:

    insert into mymonthendtable(f1, f2, f3)
values(123,'03/31/2001',12345.67);

your script (call it $HOME/bin/monthend.sh) might look like:

    #!/bin/sh
    psql -U postgres mydatabasename < $HOME/bin/monthend.sql

then run (see "man 5 crontab" for more on cron)
    crontab -e

and add an entry like

    # run at 2:15 AM on the 30th of every month
    15 2 30 * *     $HOME/bin/monthend.sh

Hope this helps,

Joe

Use a cron job.

I'm presuming that you are on some kind of unix-like system. If so, check
the "cron" system (man cron, man crontab) - use this to run a script at a
set time each month - the script can then update your database.

This can be as simple as placing a script into /etc/cron.monthly/ on some
systems (e.g. Linux Redhat) but in any case is not too complicated.

PS - it is usually easier to do this early on the first day of each month
(every month has a day 1, not all have a day 31).

Instead of "ctrl+z", press ":wq" (colon for command mode, w for write, q for
quit). This assumes that vi is your default editor.

If you are still mystified, "ctrl+z" stops a process running on a
terminal, so it's likely that your vi is still running idle. Type 'fg'
on the same terminal to bring it back. For more details on job
control, see 'info sh' and search for 'jobs'.

Which you can change by setting your EDITOR environment variable.

For example, if your shell is bash,

	export EDITOR="emacs -nw"

will do it.

And if you didn't know, you can set the VISUAL environment variable to
change your default editor.  eg..

  export VISUAL=pico

You can put this in your .profile to make it a default. Personally I
don't like line wrapping so I turn it off like this:

  export VISUAL='pico -w'

You can also use the 'v' command in from 'less' to edit a file.. very
handy..

I read your document about the porting from Oracle to PgSql and I would
like to know if
you can say to me if there is an equivalent on an the option NOWAIT for
a request
SELECT ... FOR UPDATE (for Oracle) under PgSql.

This option don't wait a previus unlock and return the information like
the line can't be lock.

Oracle:
SELECT * FROM toto WHERE id =4 and value = 'hello' FOR UPDATE NOWAIT;

PsSql:
????????????????????????

Tanks a lot....

First of all, please take this to the PGSQL-PERFORMANCE list.

Second, see this web page:
http://techdocs.postgresql.org/guides/SlowQueryPostingGuidelines

Third, from your explain, ioobject and dist_vertron are obviously somewhat
complex views. We need those view definitions, possibly plus schema for the
underlying tables (including indexes), or we can't help you.

i read some tips on the above pages and my database and all my
queries run very well.
i've optimized the queriey from where ... IN (select ..) to EXISTS
and I've done vacumdb full.

my requests last between 0.009 to 0.2 sec compared with 12-15 sec.

i'm very happy.

thanks very much.

Hello Mr. Nicholas,

You can try the following:

THIS IS WHAT I TRIED TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM, BUT IN ORACLE DBMS
(SORRY I DON'T HAVE POSTGRESQL INSTALL ON MY COMPUTER)
i GUESS YOU CAN TRY TO CHANGE THE SQL COMMANDS IN POSTGRESQL

create table numbers (
 id number not null primary key,
 description varchar2(100)
);

insert into numbers values (300, 'Three hundred (300)');
insert into numbers values (350, 'Three hundred fifty (350)');
insert into numbers values (6709, 'Six thousand seven hundred and nine (6709)');

select id, description, substr(description, instr(description, '(') +1, instr(description, ')')-(instr(description, '(') +1)) extracted_character
from numbers;
This is the Results:
ID     DESCRIPTION                              EXTRACTED_CHARACTERS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
300    Three hundred                                       300
350    Tree hundred fifty                                  350
6709   Six thousand seven hundred and nine     6709

But if you run the following query you will get exactlly what:
select substr(description, instr(description, '(') +1, instr(description, ')')-(instr(description, '(') +1)) extracted_character
from numbers:
This is the Results:
EXTRACTED_CHARACTERS
-------------------------
  300
  350
  6709

Or even simpler, or easier to understand:

SELECT trim(foo, '()') FROM foobar
