Is it possible to do hot backup in PostgreSQL, i.e. is
it possible to issue pg_dump or pg_dump_all when the
databse is up and databse activities are going on?
I am trying to give a facility to dbAdmin through GUI
to perform backup-recovery online.
Need info.

I think this must be another variant of the
6.5-pg_dump-with-7.0-database problem. There's
no error message of that spelling in 7.0 pg_dump,
but there is in 6.5 ...
Check your PATH, or invoke pg_dump using a full path
instead of letting it default.

How fast does pg_dump handle this scenario? pg_dump -h host1 dbname | psql
-h host2 dbname
What is the difference between doing the above vs. doing rsync over a secure
connections?

Depends on the speed of the network connection, I'd guess. Compression
seems to be involved by using the option "-Fc".
But I got no experience on this.
For security reasons, tunneling over ssh could be interesting.

"rsync -e ssh -z" the dumped files? Than you got compressed security
(with some speed penalties for encryption, depending on the relation
between CPU power and network bandwidth). You have to involve remote
commands on the source host before for dumping and afterwards on the
target host to restore. If you got an older dump of the source on the
target before, that could speed up a *very* lot.
I don't know how perfect rsync is in finding very small differences in
very large data. But there are options to tune it's behavior.
If you think about "rsync /var/lib/postgres/data" of running
postmasters, that should give total trash on the target. Only an
option, if both postmasters are stopped before and all databases are
to be synced.
For me, it seems more efficent to login remotely on host1 or host2
before doing the "rsync" or "pg_dump | pgsql". It that case, the data
has to be transmitted one way host1->host2 only instead of two way
host1->host0->host2 (but that penalty could depend on the network's
configuration and maybe the programs do it better automatically).
Just my ideas about differences,

Since you don't specify any dump format, your dump should be plain text
and is compressed with gzip, so the restore command is going to be:
zcat $DESTINO/soi.bkp | psql -d restore_database_name -f -
You have to create the database to restore into first.

-Z 0..9
--compress=0..9

I've install postgres in linux.
but pg_dump its not working at all.
if i execute the pg_dump to the file like this
pg_dump -Upostgres -dpostgres > file.dmp
the file file.dmp is empty
and if i execute the psql with list database option, the result is error
-bash-3.00$ psql -l
ERROR: relation "pg_catalog.pg_user" does not exist
can any one help me

This looks to me like you have more than one postmaster installed,
and you've got a mismatch in versions. Be my first guess, anyway.

IIRC, this is a symptom of selinux having interfered with initdb.
Get a newer copy of the selinux policy package (or turn it off
temporarily) and redo initdb. You can find more info if you search
our archives for "selinux".

PostgreSQL begginer. Whats the best way of exporting(dumping) a database/table/view/query to a file?
I am using PostgreSQL v 8.2. I am starting postgres server with
C:\WINDOWS\system32\net.exe start pgsql-8.2, (start service)
C:\postgresql-8.2.3-1\bin\psql.exe -h localhost -p 5432 postgres "Richard"
(psql to 'postgres')
both of which are run from shortcuts in the start menu.
my cli starts with "postgres #", then "databasename #" after connecting using \c.

With exactly what you said in the subject... pg_dump

Your other option would be with an SQL 'COPY'
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.2/static/sql-copy.html
The difference between the two is dump will give you output including
the SQL used to put it back into the database, i.e. INSERT INTO
statements whereas copy will give you a flat delimited file.
