Hello!

I have a question:

I want to create a table with a column wich will have a DEFAULT
user-function value.
Can you write an example, with the right syntax?!

I have been making some examples, but I always have a syntax error that I
can't solve.

Thank you in advance, and I'll be waiting for a response!

It could be something like:
create table test(
test_id int4 default nextval('test_seq'),
test_txt text
);

This an example of what you want
create sequence seq_master;
create table master ( id int default (nextval('seq_master')));

Obviously, 'nextval' is not a user defined function, but i guess you can
use one of yours.

NOTICE: I'm using PGSQL 6.3-2

Suerte.

can anybody explain me the syntax of Create Table documentation??

CREATE [ TEMPORARY | TEMP ] TABLE table (
        column type
        [ NULL | NOT NULL ] [ UNIQUE ] [ DEFAULT value ]
        [ column_constraint_clause | PRIMARY KEY } [ ... ] ]
        [ , ... ]
        [ , PRIMARY  KEY ( column [, ... ] ) ]
        [ , CHECK (condition) ]
        [ , table_constraint_clause ]
        ) [ INHERITS ( inherited_table [, ... ] ) ]

i don't understand what the curly brace means after PRIMARY KEY (where is
the other matching brace? ). It must have something to do with the fact
that a 'column type' pair ( with options ) can occur more than once, but is
this syntax right?
i also don't understand what the [ ... ] and [, ... ] means. I do know that
brackets denote options and | alternatives.

My docs (7.1) look like this:

CREATE [ TEMPORARY | TEMP ] TABLE table_name (
    { column_name type [ column_constraint [ ... ] ]
      | table_constraint }  [, ... ]
    ) [ INHERITS ( inherited_table [, ... ] ) ]

where column_constraint can be:
[ CONSTRAINT constraint_name ]
{ NOT NULL | NULL | UNIQUE | PRIMARY KEY | DEFAULT value | CHECK (condition) |
  REFERENCES table [ ( column ) ] [ MATCH FULL | MATCH PARTIAL ]
   [ ON DELETE action ] [ ON UPDATE action ]
   [ DEFERRABLE | NOT DEFERRABLE ] [ INITIALLY DEFERRED | INITIALLY IMMEDIATE
]
}

and table_constraint can be:
[ CONSTRAINT constraint_name ]
{ UNIQUE ( column_name [, ... ] ) |
  PRIMARY KEY ( column_name [, ... ] ) |
  CHECK ( condition ) |
  FOREIGN KEY ( column_name [, ... ] ) REFERENCES table [ ( column [, ... ] )
]
   [ MATCH FULL | MATCH PARTIAL ] [ ON DELETE action ] [ ON UPDATE action ]
   [ DEFERRABLE | NOT DEFERRABLE ] [ INITIALLY DEFERRED | INITIALLY IMMEDIATE
]
}

Looks clear to me. :-)

This doc is much improved in the more recent PG create table help.

Check out the online 7.1 Reference Manual, and there's a much nicer CREATE
TABLE grammar.

Typo. Try more recent versions of the docs. 7.1 says

CREATE [ TEMPORARY | TEMP ] TABLE table_name (
    { column_name type [ column_constraint [ ... ] ]
      | table_constraint }  [, ... ]
    ) [ INHERITS ( inherited_table [, ... ] ) ]

where column_constraint can be:
[ CONSTRAINT constraint_name ]
{ NOT NULL | NULL | UNIQUE | PRIMARY KEY | DEFAULT value | CHECK (condition) |
  REFERENCES table [ ( column ) ] [ MATCH FULL | MATCH PARTIAL ]
   [ ON DELETE action ] [ ON UPDATE action ]
   [ DEFERRABLE | NOT DEFERRABLE ] [ INITIALLY DEFERRED | INITIALLY IMMEDIATE ]
}

and table_constraint can be:
[ CONSTRAINT constraint_name ]
{ UNIQUE ( column_name [, ... ] ) |
  PRIMARY KEY ( column_name [, ... ] ) |
  CHECK ( condition ) |
  FOREIGN KEY ( column_name [, ... ] ) REFERENCES table [ ( column [, ... ] ) ]
   [ MATCH FULL | MATCH PARTIAL ] [ ON DELETE action ] [ ON UPDATE action ]
   [ DEFERRABLE | NOT DEFERRABLE ] [ INITIALLY DEFERRED | INITIALLY IMMEDIATE ]
}

The curly braces are just for grouping in cases where it'd not be clear
how far the alternatives are supposed to extend.

I guess:

 ``[ ... ]'' means that you may repeat the clause, and
``[, ... ]'' means that you may repeat the clause, using a comma for separation

You should quote the name. Please read more about it here -
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/sql-syntax-lexical.html#SQL-SYNTAX-IDENTIFIERS

Excerpt: "Quoting an identifier also makes it case-sensitive, whereas
unquoted names are always folded to lower case."

Please, lose the legaleze filler. If not possible for you, a
workaround is to use a public email service to send emails to the

Unquoted identifiers in PostgreSQL are folded to lower case. This is
contrary to the SQL spec, but it normally doesn't matter because the
rule is applied consistently.

Therefore, you have two possibilities:

1.	_Never_ quote identifiers. If you do it this way, everything
will always be folded to lower case, so your queries will always work
correctly.

2.	_Always_ quote identifiers. This way, you always get upper
case, or mixed case, or lower case, or whatever. Indeed, you can
actually have two tables named "mytable" and "MyTable" this way, if
you were so inclined/completely mad.

The important thing to remember is that you have to pick one style,
and be absolutely certain to use it consistently. If you mix the
styles, you'll get surprises.

Because being consistent is easily overlooked I would advise not to quote the table names

You likely need to escape the double-quotes. How you do it in your
environment is a topic for the manuals for that environment.
