Hello pgsql-sql,

  I have the rule for table
  CREATE RULE del_jobs_del_activity AS ON DELETE TO jobs DO DELETE FROM activities WHERE job_id = OLD.job_id;

  When i call:
  DELETE FROM jobs WHERE job_id IN (SELECT DISTINCT job_id FROM activities WHERE load_no = OLD.load_no)
  This query does not delete the record from jobs but delete the
  record by rule.

Best regards,
 Andriy                          mailto:andriy.pyrozhenko@vanjaonline.com

Question: Why don't you just set up a foreign key that will achieve exactly
the same thing without using RULEs?

ie. ALTER TABLE activities ADD FOREIGN KEY (job_id) REFERENCES jobs(job_id)
ON DELETE CASCADE;

My ALTER TABLE statement above will do exactly this.

It will delete activities when a job is deleted. Try it in a test database.

  Which is exactly what this will do. When you ask for help, you might want
to try what people suggest. If you had tried what Chris suggested (twice!)
you would have discovered that his suggestion solves the problem you have
described. Please respect the time and effort of volunteers answering
questions in this forum. You can do this best by devoting some time and
effort to thinking about and learning from the responses posted. At least
try a suggested solution before complaining that it doesn't work!

I have a rating section on a website. It has radio
buttons with values 1-5 according to the rating level.
Lastly there is a null option for n/a. We use null for
n/a so it's excluded from the AVG() calculations.

We used nullif('$value','') on inserts in mssql. We
moved to postgres and love it but the nullif() doesn't
match empty strings to each other to return null other
than a text type, causing an error. This is a major
part of our application.

AKA nullif('1','') would insert 1 as integer even
though wrapped in ''. Also nullif('','') would
evaluate NULL and insert the "not a value"
accordingly.

Is there a workaround for this so it doesn't break our
rating system? We cannot always enter a value for a
integer column. Is there any other way to accomplish
this? Please help.

Matt,

In PostgreSQL 8.0.3, I see:

postgres=# select nullif( '1', '' );
nullif
--------
1
(1 row)

postgres=# select nullif( '', '' ) is null;
?column?
----------
t
(1 row)

What behavior are you expecting?

The issue has been solved thanks to a custom
nullif_int() function. Which if anyone has the same
issue, it was solved with...

CREATE FUNCTION nullif_int(text) RETURNS integer AS
'SELECT nullif($1,'''')::int;' LANGUAGE SQL;

SELECTS were not the issue; INSERT INTO a non-text
column was the issue.

Thanks anyway,
Matthew

In PHP I use this code with a prepared statement to insert null in the field justif_emenda when
the value in the form is an empty string or a string with only spaces. I hope this will help you.

$sql = "INSERT INTO tbl_emenda ("
     . "id_emenda, subtipo_emenda, tipo_emenda, "
     . "nome_autor, titulo_autor, login_autor, "
     . "cod_acao_gov, nome_acao_gov, "
     . "texto_emenda, justif_emenda) "
     . "VALUES(?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,nullif(trim(' ' from ?),''))";
$stmt = $conn->Prepare($sql);
if (!$conn->Execute($stmt, array(
      $id_emenda,
      'S',
      'Aditiva',
      $_SESSION['nome_autor'],
      $_SESSION['titulo_autor'],
      $_SESSION['login_autor'],
      $_REQUEST['selCodAcaoGov'],
      $_REQUEST['txtNomeAcaoGov'],
      $_REQUEST['txtTexto'],
      $_REQUEST['txtJustif']
   ))) {
   erroSQL($conn, $sql);
   die("Erro..");
}

I *certainly* hope you're not passing $value in straight from your
web form directly into the SQL. You're opening yourself up for SQL
injection attacks.

Why not just have your app that reads the form generate the proper
value to insert? That is the safe route.

Call nextval first?

Too many quotes?

If you execute that (or a similar command) from psql, you'll get a more
human friendly error message:

repository=# select currval('moduleid_seq');
ERROR: currval of sequence "moduleid_seq" is not yet defined in this
session

Checking the docs at
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/interactive/functions-sequence.html

currval

    Return the value most recently obtained by nextval for this sequence
    in the current session. (An error is reported if nextval has never
    been called for this sequence in this session.) Notice that because
    this is returning a session-local value, it gives a predictable
    answer whether or not other sessions have executed nextval since the
    current session did.

So, that sequence has not had 'nextval' called on it in this session.
