Does anybody know how complicated the migration progress from postgresql
7.0.2 to oracle 8 would be??

Hmm, I'm not sure Don Baccus follows this list, otherwise I'd let him
answer this one (since it's his doc I'm going to point you at). Mostly
we like to encourage people to go the other way, but we all know there
are reasons why on might have to stop using postgresql.
Still, is there an interesting reason? Some feature missing that you've
got to have? The developer's would like to know!
Anyway, there's a porting guide for Oracle -> Postgresql at:
http://www.openacs.org/doc/openacs/html/oracle-to-pg-porting.html
You should be able to use that in reverse, as it were.

We are not looking to migrate to Oracle immediately... but the request is to
keep the option open for future migration.

Fair enough. That's how I convinced my team to using postgresql for our
project: use postgresql for development, and move to Oracle if needed
for scale up.
In that light, the trick is to stick with bog standard SQL: use no
special features of pgsql. Or if you do, make sure they're either Oracle
compatability features, or that there is a simple Oracle replacement.

Hello all,
I've got another question for anybdy that's done Postgres -> Oracle
migrations. Is there a way for oracle's sqlpls to do a read from <stdin>
like psql does with the pg_dump files? Or am i going to have to take this
pg_dump file and replace all the <stdin> lines with INSERT lines?
Or, is there a way for pg_dump to just dump sql only?

Perhaps one of the [dD] options will be of help?
wallace$ pg_dump --help
pg_dump dumps a database as a text file.
Usage:
pg_dump [options] dbname
Options:
-a, --data-only dump out only the data, not the schema
-c, --clean clean (drop) schema prior to create
-C, --create output commands to create database
-d, --inserts dump data as INSERT, rather than COPY, commands
-D, --attribute-inserts dump data as INSERT commands with attribute names
...

How about coming up with a control file and using SQL*Loader?

Perhaps pg_dump -d is the solution?

It's been a while since i did much with Oracle but last time I did do
something there was a sql loader (don't remember exact name) but you
create the table seperately then create loader files that specify the
format and table and methods to use to load in a flat datafile. This is
probably more work than you were looking for though; having to break up
the dump file into several files.
