А у вас, собственно, какая система?
Использовать пакеты (rpm, dpkg) религия не позволяет?

если речь за Free, то лично у меня никогда не было проблем с обновлением 
стандартными средствами (portupgrade)

сорсинсталинг не есть try way. (Imho)
