FYI: I added a new survey:

What PostgreSQL API do you use the most?

Anyone got any ideas for a new user survey? It's long overdue for a
change...

Regards, Dave.

Did you - oh sorry, hadn't noticed (thought I was the only one who ever
did that).

Could do I suppose - not overly sure that it's that interesting.

After I thought of it the other day, it became more interesting.

Started to wonder... what's the normal, everyday person out there
visiting the PostgreSQL site like?

So, this seems like a decent way to start figuring it out.

:)

the best way to find information.

* mailing list archive
* search interface (www.postgresql.org)
* search postgresql resources (www.pgsql.ru)
and something else....

I've already suggested some surveys last year. Here are two of'em:

Q: How many people do you serve with PostgreSQL? <text may change>
- -------------------------------------------------------------------
* <10
* 10-50
* 50-100
* 100-1000
* 1000-5000
* > 5000

Q:"How large is your PostgreSQL database?"
- ------------------------------------------

* 0-100 MB
* 100-500 MB
* 500 MB - 1 GB
* 1 GB - 500 GB
* 500 GB - 1 TB
* 1 TB - 4 TB
* > 4 TB

One of the web forums I'm on for web hosting has a 'create a survey'
option that allows ppl to do so on the fly ... maybe something like that
on our site would be good? have it similar to the events, where it has to
be approved before being put into circulation, but if there is a new one
in the wings, then have it cycled in at the end of the week, so that each
survey would last a minimum of 1 week ...

Then, have a 'last seen' date that would allow the same survey to be
displayed, say, a max of once every 3 months, so you could see changes in
results? ie. last survey might have shown PHP4 was the preferred
programming language, but in 3 months, it shifts to more of a perl focus
...

Just thoughts ...

People,

I second Devrim's suggestions, with some changes to the question text and
categories:

> Q: How many users do you support on PostgreSQL?

Also Q: What is your favorite PostgreSQL add-in feature among the below?

* Tablefunc
* Tsearch/OpenFTS
* PostGIS
* eRServer
* OraPGSQLviews
* lTree
* dbLink
* I've never heard of any of them.

Folks,

Oh, another one:

For what task do you primarily use PostgreSQL?

* Data Warehousing/Data Mining
* Web Content Serving
* Transaction Processing
* Scientific Applications
* Games/Hobby
* Several of the above
* Other/None of the above

We already have a web interface to create them on the admin site. It's
not public though, and it currently doesn't have any method of hiding
surveys we don't want to display yet. It just sets one of them as the
current survey.

That would take a fair bit of work to do as we would need to start
storing results for each 'run' of each survey, and then display the
results in an easy to compare format - probably a bar chart of some
description.

I'm stealing this idea from http://www.postgresqlfr.org/?q=node/641 but adding
a twist:

Aside from pl/pgsql, which procedural language do you use most often?

pl/j or pl/java
pl/perl
pl/php
pl/python
pl/r
pl/ruby
pl/tcl
what is a procedural language?

lmk if there are any objects, else I will put it up later today.

I think SQL counts as one as our version is Turing-complete :)

Yeah, but we already know you're the only one who'll vote for it, so it
doesn't matter. :P

BTW, anyone thought about soliciting survey ideas on the website?

Not true. My second-most-used PL is PL/PerlU, followed closesly by
PL/Perl :)

Folks,

The survey currently up is way out of date. Here's replacement suggestions.

It would also be great if David could announce new surveys in PWN.

===========
OS: it's been a while since we did a server OS survey:

Q: On what operating system are the largest or most of your production or
chief development PostgreSQL servers running?

-- Red Hat Linux
-- Debian/Ubuntu
-- Other Linux
-- Windows
-- Solaris
-- FreeBSD
-- Other OS

==========
App type:

Q: What is the database task for which you primariy use PostgreSQL in
production?

-- OLTP / e-commerce
-- Web content management
-- Web 2.0 applications
-- Data warehousing
-- Monitoring & Security
-- Several / all of the above
-- Do not use PostgreSQL in production

===========
Version:

Q: Which version of PostgreSQL are most of your servers currently deployed on?

-- 7.2 or earlier
-- 7.3
-- 7.4
-- 8.0
-- 8.1
-- 8.2
-- Latest CVS snapshot, yeah!

============
Upgrades

Q: When do you upgrade your main machines after a new PostgreSQL release?

-- I upgrade during beta
-- Immediately after .0 comes out
-- I wait for the .1 release
-- 1-3 months
-- 4-9 months
-- I'm generally 1 or 2 versions behind
-- Whenever my OS supports the new version
-- Never

As a first choice, I'd say the upgrade survey. Second, I'd choose app-type.

I don't know where the survey is, but I hate those things online.
They're dumb because the sample qualification is both self-selected
and unknown. Can't we dump it?
