Hello,

Could someone please work on captcha thing for our comment submission
page? We have lots of list members in here, but I can't see much
progress on this.

If noone is willing to do, I'll put random photos of developers instead
of captcha and ask for their names.

Thanks,

No, because the project was shelved because the was no practical way to implement captcha in an accessible way (now a legal requirement in some countries)

That'll cut submissions down to about zero...

If you put up a picture of the dancing elephant in place of Bruce's photo, I'm
on board.

That sounds great, as compared to the spam that happened in last few
days :-)

How are other web sites using captchas legally?

My guess is that they are ignoring the legality of it because they are
likely hosted in the US (where I believe it is legal) and telling
everyone else to kiss off...

Most aren't in .uk and would be liable to prosecution under the Disability Discrimination Act if they were actually UK based.

Paypal are the one site I recall that is good - they offer an audio version of the captcha string for those that need it.

Well... and this is nothing against disabled people, but really.. why do
we care about UK laws? Technically we are based in panama at least that
is where we are sourced yes?

Audio is a cool idea, I have to say. They add background noise, I am
sure. ;-)

The wwwmaster backup box is in .uk, and yes, it would be subject to UK law (which iirc came from an EU directive so similar laws most likely are/will be enacted elsewhere in Europe).

O.k. now that makes sense. Does it makes sense to move wwwmaster to a
more *liberal* country ;) (/me says that knowing that it is an odd use
of the word liberal).

I am not arguing one way or the other, just trying to help. I personally
don't care about the comments and think they should be pushed to a wiki
style system anyway.

That's easy:

1996, always on the run
10 years ago we wrote this one
Like Tom and Bruce, before its time
10 years later it is holding up fine

There was no real database when we wrote this
We stretched the boundries, we opened the door
That noone attempted before

All you need a new database, what is it?
You are kidding me, switch to PostgreSQL!

etc :)

An even better idea are the pages that ask things like "what color is
the sky" (unless spammers have gotten clever enough to figure those out,
too...)

Another alternative: "What is the 3rd word in 2nd paragraph, page 149 of
8.1 manual?"

I find it hard to believe it's against the law for an individual or
non-commercial/non-business group to make an inaccessible website.
Perhaps for businesses or government agencies, but if the UK has said
that individual sites run by individuals have to be fully accessible,
well, that's just a bit wonky.

Not that I'm against accessibility... I just find the idea of the
legality of what one does on ones own website with regard to
accessibility or inaccessibility to be a bit off.

If this is specifically about the DDA, then according to

http://www.rnib.org.uk/xpedio/groups/public/documents/PublicWebsite/
public_legalcase.hcsp#P39_3186

I don't believe we have a problem.

"Websites may be covered under the employment provisions, as they may
be a means of advertising jobs; or there may be an intranet which
staff need to use. Websites will most commonly be covered when they
constitute the provision of a service, or they are related to
education."

and the example

“What services are affected by the Act? An airline company provides a
flight reservation and booking service to the public on its website.
This is a provision of a service and is subject to the act.”

So it seems to apply to service oriented businesses or employment
related websites. Even at that it seems to be big brotherish to
me. What it also appears to come down to is it someone is disabled
and feels discriminated against by the website, then they have the
right to sue the owner of the site.

Gavin

We provide an open site intended for the use of the general public, which according to our DDA advisors (and auditors) are covered (we also host some non-business sites). And really, it's no more wonky than some .us laws, and at least it has a good purpose.

Regardless of the uk law though there is no good reason to make anything inaccessible for the sake of a little effort - we've gotten complaints about that numerous times in the past wrt fonts & colors etc.

/D

IMHO, you shouldn't see any "progress" and shouldn't try to make any.
Captcha is broken entirely at the design level
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha;, as neither prevents access by
bad actors nor allows blind people--or others without graphical
browsers--access at all.

See above.
