Dear all,
I have been reading the different mails about
installing PL/Java on Postgres under Windows Xp.
It is still not clear what exactly needs to be done.
Let me explain the steps I took till I got stranded.
I am running java 1.5 with JAVA_HOME at C:\Program
Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02.
My path is defined as follows:
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\ProgramFiles\apache-ant-1.6.5\bin
Step 1: Download and install PostgreSQL
Install the data directory on e:
Install the software on c:
Do not forget to Install Procedural Language
(pl/pgsql)
Step 2: Download and install PLJAVA
- Download pljava from the website
- Create a directory PLJAVA under
C:\ProgramFiles\PostgreSQL\8.0\pljava
- Extract the content of the file into this directory.
- Edit the contents of the postgresql.conf file which
can be found in the \data directory.
Added the following lines:
custom_variable_classes = 'pljava'
pljava.classpath =
'C:\ProgramFiles\PostgreSQL\8.0\pljava\pljava.jar'
pljava.statement_cache_size = 10
pljava.release_lingering_savepoints = true
pljava.vmoptions = '-Xmx64M'
pljava.debug = false
dynamic_library_path =
'$libdir:C:\\ProgramFiles\\PostgreSQL\\8.0\\pljava'
log_min_messages = info
Step 3: Deploy the PL/JAVA
Now I should deploy the PL/Java but it is not clear to
me how this should be done. I read something about
executing this command:
java org.postgresql.pljava.deploy.Deployer
But when I do so nothing happens.
Can anyone help me out here, what steps am I missing.
regards,
Danny

Hi Danny,
A couple questions:
1) When you invoke java by itself in your command prompt, does it
run? java should give you its list of options.
2) Did you make modifications to your user path, or to the system
path? Changes need to be to the system path, so that the postgres
service is aware of them when it starts.
3) Have you defined CLASSPATH in your install environment? For
installation, CLASSPATH needs to contain deploy.jar, as well as the jdbc
driver of your choice, found in C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.0\jdbc.
Once you've done that, running:
java org.postgresql.pljava.deploy.Deployer
should give the list of options as specified in the deployment instructions.
Also, it looks like you removed spaces from "Program Files" in a couple places - check that this is not the cause of your problem: C:\ProgramFiles\PostgreSQL\8.0\pljava
Hope some of that helps.
Cheers,
Eric

Eric,
I left out the spaces between program files because I
have all my programs installed in the directory
c:\programfiles\.
I created the environment variable CLASSPATH:
C:\ProgramFiles\PostgreSQL\8.0\jdbc\postgresql-8.0-310.jdbc2.jar;C:\ProgramFiles\PostgreSQL\8.0\pljava\deploy.jar
Now the deployer works, but I get another error. The
deployer needs a password to access the server. How
can I issue the password?
java org.postgresql.pljava.deploy.Deployer -install
postgresql.util.PSQLException: The server requested
password-based authentic
n, but no password was provided.

Most things seems to be correct so far. What do you mean when you say
"nothing happens"? A succesfull installation is typically silent. There
will be lots of output in the backend log though. If you simply got a
new prompt and no other output, then my guess is that everything went OK.

After defining the CLASSPATH as an user environment
variable that contains:
C:\ProgramFiles\PostgreSQL\8.0\jdbc\postgresql-8.0-310.jdbc2.jar;C:\ProgramFiles\PostgreSQL\8.0\pljava\deploy.jar
The deployer now works. When I create a database and
issue the command:
C:\>java org.postgresql.pljava.deploy.Deployer
-install -user compiere -password
compiere -database cmpcs
I get the message
java.sql.SQLException: ERROR: could not access file
"libpljava": No such file or
directory
But strange is that when I look at the database I find
the schema sqlj is created.
Is this what should happen? If yes why am i getting
this error message about not finding libjava?
And what should I do to solve it.

Danny

The schema is created before the functions in that schema are created
and called. The error you see is when a java function is called and
tries to instantiate the pljava binary module. Your postgresql.conf file
contains the following line:
dynamic_library_path = '$libdir:C:\\ProgramFiles\\PostgreSQL\\8.0\\pljava'
Change the first colon to a semicolon. Windows use semicolon as the path separator (it has too since colon is part of the drive designator).
Now run the deployer again with option -uninstall. You will see an error (since the language is not installed) but you can ignore it. Then try to install again.

Dear Thomas,
After stopping the postgresql server and restarting
it, I am no longer able to open the server connection
in pgadminiii. The message I get is:
could not connect to server: Connection refused
(0x0000274D/10061)
Is the server running on host "127.0.0.1" and
accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432?
When I remove these lines from my postgresql.conf it
works again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
# PLJAVA - 13-05-06

# list of names.
#

# define the class path that the JVM will use when

installations
#
#old pljava.classpath =

pljava.classpath =
'C:\ProgramFiles\PostgreSQL\8.0\pljava\pljava.jar'
# Set the size of the prepared statement MRU cache
#
pljava.statement_cache_size = 10
# If true, lingering savepoints will be released on
function exit. If false,
# the will be rolled back
#
pljava.release_lingering_savepoints = true
# Define startup options for the Java VM.
#
pljava.vmoptions = '-Xmx64M'
# Setting debug to true will cause the postgres
process to go
# into a sleep(1) loop on its first call to java. This
is
# only useful if you want to debug the PL/Java

#
pljava.debug = false
I thought installing pljava would be easy?
Has anyone succeeded doing it on windows xp?
regards,
Danny

Danny,
I'm sorry, but there's just no way there can be a correlation between
the error you get and the lines you claim you remove. There must be
something else that you overlook. My guess is that the port is busy due
to TCP/IP lingering a while after the old server closed down.
And yes, lots of people use PL/Java succesfully on Windows XP.

Dear Thomas,
Definitely these lines of code are causing the
problem. Last day when I was working on getting pljava
installed I did not stop the server when making the
changes to the postgresql.conf file.
Later the evening when I rebooted my machine I got the
same error which I could not explain. So I completely
reinstalled postgresql and the problem was over.
Today I restarted the installation of pljava and there
it was again the strange error.
When I stop the server, change my postgresql.conf and
remove these lines of code, start the server, start
pgadminiii, I can access my database.
When I stop the server, put lines of code in the
postgresql.conf, start the server, it is no longer
possible to open the connection in pgadminiii.
With the error message mentioned.
After your reply I did shut down the server and added
the lines of code. Then I rebooted my machine, and did
the same test. It is giving me the same results.
So please help me out identifying what the problem is.
Regards,
Danny

Danny,
My only recommendation is that you take a look in the server log.
Perhaps there's some indication on what's going wrong. A syntax error
somewhere in the postgresql.conf doesn't seem too far fetched.
One thing that I can see right away looking more closely is that you now
have single backslashes in your pljava.classpath. PostgreSQL uses
backslash as an escape character so all windows paths must use double
backslash. You did have that earlier in the dynamic_library_path.
Samething goes for the pljava.classpath.

Thomas Hallgren

Thomas,
Thanks, I was not aware of the fact that errors in the
postgresql.conf file could cause this.
Found two errors and corrected these. Changed the
classpath.
Problem is over solved. Thanks a lot for your support
Thomas. I managed to get it working and can see 3
languages now in pgadminiii for my database.
I will write down my steps and send them to you later.
Hopefully others can benefit from them.
regards,
Danny

PostgreSQL is unable to load the libpljava.dll because it in turn
references dll's present in your Java distribution. Unlike the standard
Java binaries, they do not reside under the %JAVA_HOME%\bin directory.
You need to add:
%JAVA_HOME%\jre\bin\client;%JAVA_HOME%\jre\bin
to your PATH.
Regards,
Thomas Hallgren
