At a minimum I think we need an infrastructure TODO list, which outlines
all the items needed to be completed on the server and the web sites.

I can host it here on my server and give people shell accounts to update
it. It can be like our current project TODO list or more like the WIn32
project page.

Perhaps this is the sort of thing a wiki might be useful for?

Good thought.

I haven't followed it closely, so I'm not sure if he's got an account
yet. He's been away, working on something else, and only got back in
the last few days.

I think I've still got root on the techdocs site, so I can create the
account for him if no-one else has time to.

?

Having just had the fun of reading all of this in one straight go (and
approving the cross-list posts at the same time), the only todo items
that actually seem to have any relevance or make any real sense are:

1) Install the updated fsck, so that if it does have to be run, it
doesn't take forever.
2) Update to the new website.

The second of which of course, has nothing to do with the server
reliability problem (and should be discussed on pgsql-www under an
appropriate thread /if/ people are willing to help rather than just tell
us to move to product X). As someone else pointed out (was it Tom?), all
the uninformed debating here just slows things down.

All the other issues are/have been worked on:

1) Search is now hosted on a pair of servers in .au, run by John Hansen.
2) The primary ftp site is on a high bandwidth, US based server. There
are ample mirrors around the world.
3) The primary website is being round-robined to some of the high
bandwidth mirrors. This is ongoing.
4) The archives are moving to a server provided by CommandPrompt. This
is happening as this discussion goes on.
5) Virtually all served content, bar some interactive stuff is served
(and mirrored) as static HTML.
6) The list servers are distributed regionally, with hub.org merely
providing the lists themselves and the central distribution server.

Now much as I like a good debate, can we please at least stop going over
old ground - my mailers getting worn out approving all these
non-subscriber posts!! :-)

Regards, Dave.

Um, how about GBorg. I left work here at Telstra several hours early
yesterday because trying to access the Slony CVS on GBorg was impossible.

Dropped connections all over the place etc. :(

I'm glad to see that improvements are being made. However, part of the
reason I think we need additional changes is that it took *so long* to
make these improvements in the first place; the archives have been
semi-functional (at best!) for many months (years?), for example.

> Now much as I like a good debate, can we please at least stop going over

I think part of the problem may be that while this may be "old ground"
to a relatively small cabal of individuals, the community at large isn't
aware of the efforts being made to improve the infrastructure, and is
frustrated by the current state of affairs. It is easy to dismiss the
discussion as "uninformed debate" -- but if Bruce and other active
contributors are "uninformed" about the current state of affairs, I
think that might suggest a problem in and of itself. Perhaps maintaining
a public TODO list of legitimate items for improvement would be one way
to inform people about what work needs to be done?

Please note that there is *still* no way to get the archives in mbox or
similar format. This is a standard features of a lot of the lists I've
seen and I've used it a lot of times. It's amazingly useful sometimes.

Both Neil and I (at least) have asked for this in the past, several
times.

Huh? How can putting a new website in place possibly move
any slower than it has? I first complained about specific
problems with the website over two years ago! The answer always
seems to be "well, we have a new version that is about to go
in place any day now" I'm also not sure why debate needs to
be perceived as a bad thing - this is an open-source project, and
one would hope that applies to the whole project: DNS, web site,
mailing lists, etc.

> Now much as I like a good debate, can we please at least stop

That's the problem, isn't it - this is old ground. That's why Bruce
raised the thread in the fiest place - after all these years, we
still seem to be spinning our wheels. Problems with the site tend to
be a) not noticed right away, and b) fixed slowly if at all. People
reporting problems or offering suggestions are often met with
hostility and rudeness. The -www list was a secret and exclusive
club (although it is better now).

OK, well I didn't see that problem noted in amongst the rest of the
thread. Was that a widespread problem? Certainly I didn't have any
issues with anoncvs or pgfoundry's CVS yesterday, and Gborg is running
like lightning for me at the moment.

Well, if Telstra are anything like BT, then they wouldn't be able to get
a packet transmitted over a hundred miles, never mind a few thousand ;-)

Dunno. Mentioned it on the slony IRC and was told there was heavy
packet loss from a switch in Panama.

Seems fine today of course, but it seems like we shouldn't forget the
important major hosted PG sites as well in this conversation if we're
worried about outages. :)

Heh

There are definitely some parts of Telstra that have a consistency like
that, but for *this* particular part of Telstra, it's the backbone
between the rest of Telstra (and thus most of Australia) and the outside
world.

Like, our routers are the end point off of the international connection,
and we provide the bandwidth to the rest of Oz. Doesn't mean we're 100%
perfect, but things are past the "mission critical" status and into
national "critical infrastructure" if that helps. ;)

Justin Clift

Because if the people complaining so hard put that effort into helping
do the actual work, then it would undoubtedly get completed more
quickly.

I don't recall anyone saying 'any day now'. I do remember lots of people
saying they were pushed for time but the code is being worked on. This
is an open source project - we have limited time available.

Debate is not bad, however, this dicussion has drifted onto topics such
as use of Bricolage or other CMSs. We've done those topics to death, and
there's really no need to go over them again, especially when the new
code is essentially complete and simply awaiting content.

Such as when? I make a point of responding to and fixing all problems I
see on the www list (and the many more that come to webmaster) that I am
able to deal with on the same day.

> People reporting problems or offering

How would you know this? You don't see the emails I get and respond to
every day addressed to webmaster@.

> The
> -www list was a secret and exclusive club (although it is better now).

Yes, one of the first things we did following a major change of
personnel a year or so back was open up the list. That is the sort of
old topic I don't see the need to be debating again as it's ancient
history.

I've heard of the archiver stall occasionally, but as far as I'm aware
they were never actually broken. The bottom line is though, there aren't
enough ppl actually doing the work. Marc looks after the archives, and
like all of us, he has limited time. If someone were to volunteer to
take on and maintain and improve the archives, I'm sure more would get
done.

But that's exactly the point. Bruce is a member of the www list, and
therefore should see all the discussions we have. It's extremely rare
that any of us talk off-list, so any subscriber should know what's going
on if they pay attention (note that I am not having a go at Bruce here).

Certainly not a bad thing, but the major thing we need is people able
and willing to put more time into specific projects.

For the record no one has ever offered to fix any of the issue I put in
the bug tracker for gborg that were techdocs related. Much like Tom and
Dave have said, if people don't show up to do the work it's kind of
moot. Outside of Charlie, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne, I don't see anyone
beating down my door. :-\

Well there are archives of course though as you are aware, they are not
currently publically available - perhaps we should copy them onto the
ftp tree when each file is rotated?

'Neil and I' is technically correct, though you will certainly hear
'Neil and me' in common use in parts of .uk (the east end of London
springs to mind for some reason) :-)

That could be most useful to many people....
